I had an intermittent starter problem that turned out to be corroded live feed from battery to solenoid.

High resistance meant voltage was fine but not enough amps to kick everything over.

You should still be reading 12v at the starter with the solenoid tripped though even if there isn't enough juice to turn it over.

Cheers for that, going to change the battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter cables and see how that goes. Just getting fed up with this, if I could get it to turn the starter I can get on with putting everything else back together

UPDATE = Still not starting! Going to my local supplier who is going to make up a new solenoid to starer cable.......................fingers crossed.

ok........................................to date!
Changed all earth straps and starter to solenoid lead, got really excited...................turned the key...........................and got a f*****g click.

AAAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Damn ****e **** x2. Just replaced the alternator and fan belt this morning. Went to start up and solenoid clicking! FFS! I've renewed the ignition system, new exhaust, new headlights...and now this ****e.

I feel your pain, I am going to try dragging it out of the shed, jump start or rocking it in gear.............if no change it is then getting loaded on a trailer and dragged to my land rover specialist (Mike Aitken in Ladybank, Fife) and pound notes being spent!

I hate defeat:mad:

Ok, just discovered that the starter motor has a short. Worked perfectly on the bench but one it had load applied it couldn't hack it and was shorting itself out.

Time to buy a new starter motor!

Just read through this thread as I am suffering intermittent starting issues on my '82 SWB 2.25 petrol. Starts on the handle fine, but every now and then the dreaded click. Will start with a wiring overhaul and then move on to mechanical bits once that has all be proven. New solenoid and battery in stock ready just just in case!

ok, having changed every component linked to the ignition I finally splashed the cash and spent a disgusting amount of money (fiver) on new points and a condenser and lo and behold..........the old landy lives once more!
