New condenser and points always a good swap.have you got the carb overhaul instructions , is it In manual , mines a diesel but not checked , they’re probably straight forward to clean jets and set float height

They take so much oil! 🙂 I'm already half way through the 20l tub. It took me all day yesterday replacing the oils, I made sure the plugs were all cleaned up and soaked in fluid before attempting removal. They hadn't been done in while, one of the plugs had been rounded off, mole grips got it off and a new one ordered. I'm pleased all the mechanical parts are now sitting in fresh oil.

The Zenith carb is crying out for a service, valve clearances need checking and the timing is way off.
 
Welcome, Zenith carbs
are well known for warping but good when working. Cheap Chinese versions tend to be rubbish. We replaced ours with a good deal on a webber carb when it was beyond our repair.
Simonbbc are good for decent quality ignition parts.
Don't forget swivel oil and get the grease gun out.
Overdrive is a good addition, we had one on the 2a.
Have fun, sounds like you know what you're doing, always a bonus.

Points and condenser are consumable items so best changed regularly :)
They don't cost much and I'll make a note to replace them sooner.

I have wanted a series Landrover since childhood, it's my dream car! I've been researching and looking for years, but I have zero practical experience with them. I did have a Suzuki Jimny for a few years, which I think are a great introduction into 4x4 ownership.

I've not been far enough in the s3 yet to see if the overdrive whines or even works. I noticed someone has put a split pin in the top plate breather hole, trying to block the hole.

Ours also had a split pin in the breather hole.
We put extended breathers in the gear boxes, along with the axle breathers.
Our first day out resulted in it breaking down on a regular basis due to a cheap Zenith copy which, somehow, the previous owner had put on back to front! Bought a used Zenith for £25, bargain.
Our gearbox wined like a good un and sang a merry tune in reverse. 60mph seemed to be it's happy spot on the motorway in overdrive much more and your ears would be bleeding. Good memories of my son driving on L plates and many green lane trips, lots of maintenance though.
Oh, I should say it never let's us down to the point of never been able to drive home. We would often be out doing 10 hours days on green lane trips.
Get your fluids done, change the antifreeze and get some miles on it and enjoy it.

Usually the split pin wobbles about keeping the hole clear of mud and dirt, a good idea really ...

The carb looks quite new which makes me think I had better check to see if its a copy.
