I have a friend who has recently bought a 3 series landrover which was running and starting fine for a week or so. It has since sat in a barn, but when we tried to start it, the red ignition light on the dash flicked on and then off and nothing happened. No click from the starter... just sounded like the battery was flat.

The ignition light would flick on and off maybe twice when we tried it then after that the light would not even come on. Its done this a few times when we have tried to start it.

What would be the most common fault for this? and where should i start? (The battery is new and has 12v)

A fully charged battery should have 12.6v across it so make sure the battery is charged. A flickering ignition light could be caused by a number of things - poor live connection to/from solenoid, poor earth from battery to chassis/engine, poor alternator connections, flat battery. From your description it sounds like your battery is dead or has very poor live/earth connections. Do the lights work?

No the lights dont work, i have tried jump starting it and still nothing. So im thinking its either bad earth to the chassis or theres a bad positive to the ignition switch. I checked the wires on the back of the switch yesterday and one had a permanent live and today i couldnt get one but when i was checking some wires i went back to the dash and the lights had come on. Would it most likely be the live from the starter solenoid?

Wiring on a series is simple well on mine anyway

Earths are on the gearbox mounting area on mine (might be the same on yours)

earth for engine and items attached to it is on the passenger chassis rail near the bulkhead mount

Positives cant remember
