Should only use the copper ones once too

thank you. I am familiar with the instalation arrangement, and have just change three injectors and both their steel and copper washers. the 4th one however doesn't have a seat in the very bottom of the hole for the steel washer/end of injector to seat on.
my question was is there a separate part from the head and where is it gone??

only one flange/seat visible, the larger one where the copper washer seats.

the seat is like a top hat with a hole in it. If it is missing smoke can result as it is effectively part of the combustion chamber. The small crinkled steel washer is a heat shield for the nozzle and injector damage can result if either the crinkle washer and or top hat is missing/damaged

thank you Adrian,
Another injector had the steel washer missing too, so with both fault it could explain for the smoke and bad running.
Does that top hat fit from the top of the head or from the piston side?

it fits from top i cannot recall if it has a very thin copper washer beneath it but most similar style indirect engines do. I think land rover part is 524680 but you may find a lot cheaper if talk to someone has access to LDV part numbers

if you have a long established diesel fuel injection specialist nearby i would ask them to test injectors AND if they can supply a top hat. When I worked for Lucas we always kept them in stock. The injetros in land rover are not the easiest to get working properly during reconditioning, even when relatively new we used to end up scrapping a lot of injector nozzles and we had facility to re-cut the nozzle seats and precision grind the needle seat

now interestingly and worryingly, it seem that the bore in the missing Cyl is the same depth and diameter as the bore with the correct shoulder...
which leads me to believe that only the top of the shroud if missing or broken off.
see pictures from Cyl 3 (ok) and Cyl 4 (faulty).
I guess I will have to somehow remove the top part of the shroud before fitting a new one...

Seeing that you are West Midlands based Adrian, was it Lucas at Plume Street where you worked ?

the spare set has been test by CJ Diesel and deemed ok. looks like I 'll have to rake the head of now, shroud are very tight, so need to tap from the other side. Will give a me a chance to check other stuff and change gasket and valve seals I guess...

Agree
Can you do some depth measurements with calliper to compare bores,
Edit . Depth to top shoulder 39.5mm
Depth to bottom shoulder 52.4mm
