Ive got a 1983 series 3 petrol, and it clicks when the key is turned, i have changed the starter motor and it still does the same, the battery is good.
It got a new coil and starts first time off a bump start.

Any ideas what i can check next.

guess you checked the starter before fitting?
connect up jump leads to battery, find a good earth for the negative and go straight to starter with the other end, if it goes then look for poor earths/solenoid

its worth checking the earth straps and cleaning em up. check solenoid. A lot of blokes short out the solenoid terminals with a heavy duty insulated screwdriver which bypasses it to allow battery voltage to the starter. Im not a fan of that and can be dangerous.

Id get a multimeter and check voltage before and after the solenoid to rule out a faulty solenoid. It might be coming from the ign switch as well?Doc.

mine did that I had to whack the solenoid (bit of 2x4 , or what ever at hand) then it started fine. Had it replaced, jobs a good un!

Hi, are you certain the battery is good? I've had this same problem on quite a few vehicles and every time but one it was the battery at fault. As someone else said though, get a multi meter, check everything with it, clean up the earths and all contacts.
