Hi guys,

Fitted the new springs all round today. Heavy duty on the rear. Once all was fitted, I left shackle bolts loose to settle the springs, however the rear springs seem very low. The springs aren't handed and everything was replaced for new. Anybody have any suggestions how to fix this? Or is this just how they are going to sit. Apart from the roof rack there was only a tool box and chainsaw in the back.

You need to pre load the bushes. Measure the gap between the axle and the chassis and adjust (by adding weight or jacking) before tightening the bush bolts. The standard measurement is in the manual but you might need to add a bit for the parabolics. pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com
 
There's definitly something wrong with them... If anything you should need to be adding weight in the back to stop them riding too high when you tighten the shackles. Manual gives a measurement for ratcheting down normal leaf springs using a jack and chain prior to tightening, but as parabolics ride higher then this does not relate. When I did mine I was told by the guy at GB Springs to keep them loose and get some hefty fellas to bounce on the back or to take it for a short drive before finally tightening them to get them to settle in (no need to set to a given measurement).

Yours are way to low and I suggest that you send photograph to supplier to show how low they are. I had several sets from Paddocks which eventually they refunded my money for as they were of very poor quality and did not sit right. I then got a set from GB Springs which are excellent, and similar price - would highly recommend them if you do not get the right replacements from your previous supplier

Post a photo of the springs Britpart ones can I believe be identified by the arrangement at the ends.
 
Ok I will do when I finish work. They are a few years old so would I still be able to get them to replace them if they were britpart? Cheers

If it's any help, the book gives the standard spring lengths as 36 1/4" front and 48" rear. Problem is, it doesn't say if that's fitted and correctly loaded or off the vehicle. Neither does it say where the measurements are taken from.....
 
Spoke to the guy from GB Springs. Really helpful. Has said to take them off and measure the distance of the springs from the middle to the ground when placed upside down. Also to check the measurements of the chassis, axle etc as it had a new rear cross member, to check it was welded correctly. He was pretty sure I've got crap soft springs that need replacing though.

I got some gbsprings and Paul was very helpful. His certainly don't sag like that! If anything the three leaf ones are a bit too stiff for an unloaded SWB but perfect with a couple of hundred weight in the back..
 
Right I have quickly taken a couple of photos to show the extent of the lean. I am 99% sure they were not handed. I'm also positive the chassis is not at fault. I'm considering replacing the rears with standard HD springs and extended shackles for the time being.

Up until about 2 years ago Paddocks sold some really nasty cheap springs which when you actually did some digging were actually produced in India, despite suggestions that they were "British".... they had so many complaints that they changed supplier, but never bothered finding out who that was as had already got my refund by then and purchased another set from GB springs. My problem was more related to a lean to one side due to no handing of the springs - Yours are obviously way too flat from looking at the photos, and assuming the fitting points are the correct distance apart then the springs must be wrong.... If you are thinking about buying another set then cannot recommend GB Springs enough (think a full set is about £250 now) and they are handed!!!!

Heystee are the Dogs doo-dahs apparently, but when I priced them up for mine they were over £1000 so out of my budget

Surprised to hear bad rep relating to Rocky Mountain springs, as I have heard nothing but good reports about them from people I know who have them fitted - Only problem that I was aware of with them was that standard diameter bushes did not fit them, but I believe they now provide replacement bushes of the correct size (oh yes, and they are also handed)

I've found the receipt and they were bought from paddocks in 09. It states they are short wheelbase but having wrong parts sent from them before could they be too long and for a 109?? That may explain the flatness and extreme shackle angle.

No, I think they're just far too weak. If they were LAB they'd still have plenty of curve. You're gonna have to bite tyre bullet and get some decent ones.... I'd replace all four
 
When we fitted the new springs on our series 3 (heavy duty not parabolics though) ours sat too low to start with. The shackles had been set up wrong and needed adjusting. Yours are facing very far back so maybe jacking it up and resetting them could solve it instead of being a fault with the springs?

The problem with the shackles is no matter how tight I do them once jacked up, they will rotate in the chassis bushes back to that position I think.
