A bit of help please. Landy was MOT'd on 15th which was the last time I used it. Went to start it and it won't. Engine turns over fine but no ignition.

I took the spark plugs out and they spark agains't the block when cranking. They were very dirty.

Is it possible they won't earth against the block properly as the threads etc are very dirty or am I likely to be looking at a fuel pump problem?

It ran absoultely fine before that.

You have ignition but do you have fuel? Take off the pipe leading from the lift pump going into the carburettor and turn it over a few turns. If fuel is getting to the carb it could be dirty plugs. Try this and get back.

Lift pump, blockage in pipe or no fuel in tank.

Check the tank for fuel first - might as well get the obvious one out of the way first.

Secondly, i'd try gently 'sucking' on the end of the fuel pipe, you'll either get a mouthful of petrol (yuck) or feel a blockage. If it's a blockage you could either try blasting a small amount of air down the pipe or just replacing the pipe (though try and work out where the blockage has come from, if it's rubbish in the tank it's worth cleaning the tank out too)

Ta. Do you mean sucking the bit by the carb? This will then bring fuel from the tank, through the pump and up the pipe. If there is fuel then pump has gone wrong.

If no fuel then I have to take it off any way to find which pipe has blockage.

There is fuel in it. I thought of this first and tipped 5l from the jerry can I always carry. I have run it low on fuel a couple of times so might well have rubbish somewhere.

Yes, either suck the bit by the carb or the bit pre-pump, starting with the bit by the carb makes most sense, cus, if you get fuel (or can feel movement, you don't need to fill your mouth) then it would strongly suggest it is the pump at fault.

If it's a 2.25 petrol i have a spare lift pump kicking around i think, used, but, working when taken off, happily point it in your direction for the cost of the postage.

A kind offer. Happily I won't be needing it. I gave it a suck (oo, er, missus) and then fired it immediately into life.

A blast (you know what I mean) around the roads to ensure some decent running and recharge the battery I had emptied while playing and you'd never know it had stopped.

Interestingly it now starts better than before. I pressed the button after brimming the tank and it was instant!

Cheers for the help gents. I am a happy lad. Mainly because if the snow comes the MX-5 won't cut it.
