Hi everyone,

We've got a 2000 Td4 with 86k miles, it's an auto, and has a FSH. Having just had a scare with the Gearbox (good news in the end, just a wiring fault), we were wondering, given the gearbox's propensity to break, whether we should maximise the value, and sell now?

Just wondering on opinions?

Thanks,

Oscar

I dont really get this one. . . .if your happy with the motor, then dont worry if yer auto box or anthing else goe's just replace it , after all any motor can have a fault at any time, besides Ashcrofts do a recon gearbox that will be good fer ever :)

My issue is I don't want to spend in the region of £1500 (Ashcroft Price!) in the next 18 months or so! If the autobox was prone to failing between about 90-100k (which I know some do), then I would certainly think about selling now, and avoid this dent to my wallet, and upgrade to a newer model/manual.

I take your point that any car can have a fault, but new autoboxes are not a 'run of the mill' fault, and the cost, when compared to the 3-4k value of the car, is a large percentage.

It's really just a judgement as to whether it is likely or not to go.

I think you might be a bit optimistic at a value of 3 - 4K given the current market conditions!

Even more reason to sell if the GB is about to go!

Seriously, I have seen worse ones/more mileage for 3.5k - I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, but I am under no illusions....

I like the autobox too, as does my wife!

In terms of what I'd buy? Either a later Auto Td4 (at most 50k mileage), or a Td5 Discovery, which you can get for a very reasonable price at the moment.

Why don't you just book your car in to get the auto fluid changed & carry on running the car till it eventually dies which will probably be a long while yet. Oh & yes, you are rather optimistic on price, I bought my 03 Auto almost a year ago with 52k on the clock (done 60k now) for £4700 & would reckon to get around £3k maybe £3.5k on a very good day.

And my 2001 51 plate, with 56k miles only cost me £1600 (OK I know its a petrol - but even so)

The price you see is what they're asking. Not whats paid. Watch the prices on ebay. Bidders don't bother on the dealer £5k v6's. See what the private sales get. Then consider your options.

Calm down Zoltan, you'll blow a gasket!

Tight arsed?? Some might say shrewd....:D

The price thing's quite interesting...if yous lot are right (you probably are), then there are either lots of people on autotrader who will never sell or lots of people out there who are prepared to pay over the odds! Hopefully the latter!:p

I'm with Ming on everything. If it goes wrong, get it fixed, otherwise what's the worry??

I'll 3rd that. You'll loose more than that on buying another car from a dealer that you don't know this history.

Plenty of autos go well in to the 100,000s

I think she's survived the stay of execution, all things considered. I think I'll get the gearbox fluid changed and hope for a 200,000 miler! :D

Anyone know if this is a D-I-Y job, or a tad more challenging?
