The runaround Seat Ibiza _has_ to go!

She who must be obeyed has shown an interest in having a Landrover

I see the choices as either a second Disco TD5 (So I can share spares with my current one)
or a Freelander 2 for its relative fuel economy
Or maybe just a recent Freelander '1'

Anyone got any good reasons to go either way?

But are there any good reasons for the Freelander?

Or even better reasons to have second Disco TD5?
 
It's like u ask vegetarians on vegetarian's forum how do they like the raw beef stake.... (just joking):D ...IMO u cant compare a Disco2 with any Freelander ... they are different class
 
Fair point - I guess I need to specify how the car will be used...

Its not going to have an off-road life - it'll be used as a family runaround and possibly long journeys for holiday in Europe

Does that make a difference?
 
Iv had a p38 and changed it for a disco td5 Es and mine is just used for a runaround and towing vehicle and cannot fault it

then just compare the space within... think how many luggage u can put in a Freelander without being cramped for room

Well if I were you, I wouldn't have either as Land Rover's are not built for that and lets face it, they are pretty **** at being ordinary cars. They handle like ****, guzzle loads of fuel and are probably one of the least reliable cars you can have.

Only reason I have a landy is because I'm a keen off road enthusiast. If I didn't ever intend on going off road, I'd buy something like a BMW 3 Series or Volvo V70 if I needed the space. Good reliability, better on-road manners, practical and much more fuel efficient. (well, not so much the V70 but it's an improvement)

If you just want a car for ordinary use, there's much better alternatives than a Land Rover.

I know it might sound unfaithful but I think it's just practical and realistic advice tbh. It would almost be like someone who lives in a city buying a Massey Ferguson tractor just to do the weekly shop and go on holiday travels! Sure, they're excellent tractors and are very good at doing what they do, but not the best tool for this particular job.

But on the other hand, if you still want a Landy, get a disco. The Freelander was designed to be a compromise and that's all it will ever be.

Sod the fuel economy think of the space. Auto box, td engine, laughing for long hauls. Plus you can stick loads on the ample roof space.. and then u can investigate the odd track while you're away ;)
 
freelander 2, cheaper to run, cheaper to insure, wife will love it and you, its also quicker, ie a bit of fun, and easy to park, you know you want one or you would not be asking!!!!
 
freelander. If her parking is like my ballasts she'll find it easier and it will be more car like for her to drive.

With all its electrickery working (EAS and ACE), the disco 2 actually handles quite well and as a long distance cruiser they are a rather nice vehicle.. Yes they drink like a diabetic camel, but thats just one of them things - its a 2ton vehicle, its gonna drink fuel. Reliability wise, keep on top of the servicing and keep and eye on common faults, and they are as reliable as any other vehicle IMO.


TaDa If your misses wants something easy to park though... anything but the disco, as you will already know, they tend to have an orbit of a small moon rather than a turning circle lol

Well this is an old thread so guess you made a decision.
I am reaching a similar point, which way did you go and any tips ?

It's still a car you can work on!
Chassis - if needing welding? You can do it!
Body - if it needs replacing? You can do it!
(Also you can swap the above)
Electric - if needing to rewire? You can do it!
There is nothing on a D2 you can't do yourself if you don't mind the hours or pennies spent?.?
