How ironic is this then!!!

We let half of our French watermill out as a Holiday let and clients have just turned up tonight for a 4 month long winter let-Guess what they drive? A 1994 300tdi disco!Owners for the last 6 years and they are well happy with it!:)

Still haven't found one but dead envious having one parked outside-Fingers crossed!
 
Now that I have made my mind up to go for a Discovery can't find one!:mad:
Why is it always like that?I mean for the whole of France on e-bay there are about 20 and all seem to be at the opposite side of this very large country from me!
The only reasonable vehicle that I have found is a 1995 300tdi expat owned with the steering wheel on the right.
Has any one undertaken a right hand drive-left hand drive conversion?Is it feasible or plain madness?What would be needed?New Steering rack,dash,peddles?????????
Also am I correct in saying that the cam belt should be changed at 60K Miles and what kind of a job is this???

yes it would be madness to change to left hand drive, and very expensive. bite the bullet and buy/drive a right hand drive one.

re the cam belt. recommended service is 60k miles.
the experts say do it at 40k. better to safe than sorry. very sound advice.
 
Still haven't found a Discovery:mad: and if it carries on like this I will probably be coming back to Blighty to get one.
After endless searching on this Landy site and others it appears that full or good service history is essential when buying a good Land Rover.Is this because they are prone to coolant,engine/gearbox leaks which if not picked up on at regular service intervals could have disastrous consequences?
What does an average service on a Discovery consist off? How often should gearbox oil need changing,what needs greasing etc.........?
 
Nothing to complicated on a Disco 2 when servicing - would imagine the earlier models are similar. IIRC the gearbox oil is changed every 2nd year or 24,000 miles, and there are grease nipples on the prop shaft that need done.

Hi there,

We have an old Discovery 1 on an L reg 2.5tdi, it's now done 171000 miles and drives really lovely. Tyres cost me about £60 each and to fill the tank is around £65, but gives back about 550 miles. The ride is lovely and it's the best driving position of any car that i'v ever had, including my BMW, volvo and Audi. I love it and even though it's old now i wouldn't swap it for the world and won't do until it finally dies for good. Then i will only replace it with a newer one ! Go on.....you obviously want too. It's almost Christmas, treat yourself.

Nice place you have ...we're not too far away, being in Civray.

Been looking at LR's myself on eBay.fr and like you say - few and far between. A garage around here has had an old Disco (about a 1990 as I recall) up for sale for the past three years that we have been around the area, and godness knows how long before that! Still insists on asking a stupid price for it though!

Re: Td5 - it doesn't have particular problems with the electronics, you just get a lot of LR enthusiasts who don't like electronics because you can't fix them "in the field", which is fair enough if you're doing that a lot, but I don't think you'll find the Td5 any more or less reliable than a Tdi - tho you will find them a lot nicer to drive! The only problem you might get with a newer model is that the garages around here haven't got a clue what to do with them! When my P38 air suspension died (same as on the rear of the Td5) the local garage suggested trucking it to Limogues (for a nice fee!) as they hadn't got a clue what to do with it. In the end I fixed it myself with parts couriered from the UK!

Civray! 30mins (ish) away, know it well, drive through regular on our way to the "Val de Vienne" race track!

I've been here nearly 17 Years now and every vehicle change has been a major operation,especially if you are looking for anything non Renault,Peugeot or Citron!!! Not really keen on a right hand drive but don't want to pay 11000 eurkers for a 10 year old 300tdi with 250k km's on the clock either!! So if all else fails looks like I'll be taking the kids home to see their Grand parents with a wod in my pocket!!!

Are you looking for one too? Maybe we could buy 1 get 1 free and split the difference!:D

Never been, but must make the effort some day! My local mechanic races there.

I wish, but we've just spent our "car money" on an Espace (UK unfortunately, as all I could find around here were complete wrecks in our price band! - actually going back to pick it up this coming w/end!) I was very tempted by a 110 CSW for sale at 5000 euros in the local town, but it just isn't practical for my work sadly as the rear door access is limited.

If you really want a clean low mileage 300tdi with all the bits look at the jap imports first. Search the Internet and you'll find several dealers. These vehicles were mostly used around petro-chemical plants by white collar staff and the island has strict speed restrictions so you won't find them hammered or corroded. Make certain the dealer includes a full LR service especially filters and has all the paperwork including certified mileage certificate. You can get a (Jap) search for £35 to confirm it's not nicked or wanted for unpaid fines.
I bought one which was just UK registered. My dealer was really good and fixed every last detail under his warranty unfortunately he doesn't do the importing. If you do some online searching like "AutoTrader" you'll find some really good bargains. The Jap version "COUNTY" I got is a 300tdi Auto, 38,000, and it looks and performs like new.

Hi Every body!

Just to let you know that I bought said Discovery today! Steering wheels on the wrong side (Right) but beggars can't be choosers.Well happy :) It's had a good service history, runs well,115K miles,4 new tyres,2 years M.O.T (yes 2 years in France) and is in very good condition for year and drives like a dream:p .

It's thanks to you geezers for all your help and advice that I have taken the plunge and I THANK YOU!!
I haven't had time to have a really good look at her and there are few things I would like advice on but will do under another posting as him not "Scared" anymore!!!
