Apparently, but we'll see !

Picking up tomorrow.

Hope you can get it back on the road easily.

But there's plenty of reasons why a TD4 might be knackered.

I'd have thought a snapped crank would be much more likely that a run away.

If its not been looked at by a mechanic, it might be the starter motor needs replacing!

Have a good spare engine in stock so not too worried. If a garage have written the engine off I am more hopeful it isn't too bad !

Love the finding out bit ! I'll extract what info I can but have a feeling the seller is not the owner who would know about the failure.

It's home.

Sadly, someone has been in the engine bay before me !
Fuel rail to injector links disconnected, one injector missing and the others loose.
PCV top cover loose and fitted with BMW mod cyclone device.
All covers and intercooler hoses disconnected and air cleaner cover loose.

So - what can we see:
1. good condition underneath, just needs a tank cradle and rear silencer.
2. good inside except some Devon damp causing light mold.
3. all panels undamaged and only paint lacquer defect is on the front plastic grille.
4. all tyres nearly new, still bearing the tyre fitters slime on the beads.
5. alloys unmarked and no kerbing.
6. radio has been removed and aerial broken.
7. heated front seats and screen fitted.
8. all windows and central locking working.
9. engine partly disassembled, all coolant missing from header tank, oil level about 3 x what it should be, no more oil in intercooler hoses than normal.

So - thinking diesel in oil probably, doubtful it has been massively overfilled but possible. Injector and / or HP pump failure.

Plan - use tube and suck out anything in the bores, see what is in there, fit 4 working injectors, drain oil and refill with correct quantity (will use previously used oil until problem sorted), turn engine over by hand and see if it has been hydrolocked or is bent or jammed.

If all good will try to run it - could replace HP pump while I am at it or try it and see.

Any other views or ideas welcomed.

Can't read my SD card for photos at the moment. They will follow !!

Thanks all.

If there's coolant in multiple bores, that would be a bit strange for HGF or something like that.

I wonder if the head has been off and coolant spilled into the bores.

Having said that, if its damaged them or the pistons, then it don't matter how it got in there.

So header tank was split.
Replaced that and system holds 20 psi for a few hours. That's good news.

One injector is black death and the remaining2 look new.

Just drained 13 litres of something out of the sump !! No water in it though. Very thin oil !

Turns over by hand.

So, what gives volumes of diesel into the oil. Got to be HP pump I reckon. Injectors wouldn't provide that much ??? Would they ?

How does that explain coolant in bore 1 I hear you ask !! Further inspection shows coolant is all over the top of the engine and so either the split sprayed it or the top was removed. Injector 1 was already out when I picked it up so it could have been residual splashing !!

Found all the missing injector clips and nuts in the wiper scuttle. Still there after an hour on the motorway 😀

The 2 x new looking injectors are neither part number:

0445110049 manual cars TD4
Or
0445110130 auto cars TD4.

They are 0445110030 which appears to be from a Rover 75. Could this cause overfueling and so the diesel in oil problem??

If they don't communicate properly with the ECU then maybe they just open ??

Who knows their Rover cars ?? @Arctic2 please !!

from google search "rover 75 injectors in a freelander 1"

..
more likely to be the hp.pump i reckon.
.

HI Andy.
Sounds a little bit like i had on the smoking FL1 injectors should not be mixed, the FL1 i worked on had 3 Lucas injector and one Bosch, and it was the Bosch that had the black gunk.

Therefore i would only use the 0445 110030 injectors x 4 in the FL1 not mix them it will give a different balance and maybe different rate of the spray pattern.

Try replacing the 030 with some 0445 110049 injectors.

The ports will need cleaning out i did the FL1 smoke car by adding a large ball bearing into the port to stop debris going into the hole for the tip, and debris was then sucked out with my modified hoover and tubes.

Tips removed and cleaned making sure that the 5 hole spray pattern was all the same and even. new copper washer fitted, the oil in the smoke FL1 also was very thin and i thought it's been a runner away eating it's own oil or fuel as gotten into the oil somehow that was the reason for changing the HPFP.

that was the reason for changing the HPFP.
Many thanks for the details.

As I read the thread the HPFP was most likely not to blame is that correct ??

My plan is clean and fit 4 x 049 working injectors with new seals. Refill with fair but used oil and see what happens.

If level goes up still then refurb the pump or fit a working used one.

Had the oil level risen in your recent repaired one??
