nothing fundamentally wrong with the current vehicle, does need a make over and to be made less labour intensive,im sick of seeing jap pickups on construction sites etc, even the bloody police are using l200s....
the landcruiser is baisically the same as its ever been, its just welded not bolted together,
its gonna be another bloody Chelsea tractor not a work vehicle,

Singed. Sick of crapy jappy pickups being the vehicle of choice. If land rover stop production of the defender and produce another shiny **** wagon it will be a travesty

I've happily signed... after only just getting one after wanting one for sooooo long it's a travesty that they are stopping production!

Can we have a "save the Freelander" fred too?

Save it from being produced yeah.

Kidding - if it has the LR badge, chances are I like it (unless it's 2wd). But don't come looking to me for sympathy when all the others start on yer gaylander :D

Has anyone else got Land Rover Monthly. Seems to say production is moving to a India for emerging markets. I guess the defender is "saved".

I could photo the page, but might be copyright infringement.
I'm a subscriber so I have the June ( !? ) issue already.

I suppose it's light on facts and the quote is from an undisclosed source but it seems like a credible idea they say the new models will be built in the uk and the entire current defender production line will be dismantled and shipped abroad to a low cost region.

I read that, it said about moving it to India, producing it along side the replacement "defender" for the time being, and they were looking at scrapping the 90 and just building the 110..... which is ****. And possibly going back to sticking TDI lumps in it as India is more relaxed on the old co2 stuff.

Hardly a British vehicle any more. The EU is all about supporting and supplementing European growth and economy..... how on earth does shifting this large production over to india help matter? I guess in 20 years time we shall all be driving jap crap

Much as we all love driving and working on our Landies, you can't deny that it's a bit of a dinosaur. By modern standards it's slow, noisy, unrefined and uneconomical. Unless you're an enthusiast who wants one because they like the vehicle, you'd be mad to buy one new when there are much better vehicles available. Land Rover have held out on production for a long time because it's such an icon, but the simple fact is that it's a relic that is increasingly out of place. I'm sure the VW crowd felt the same about the original beetle stopping production but that's just the way the car industry goes.

As far as replacement goes, I doubt there's really much of a market there for a like-for-like new model, though hopefully we'll see something like the original discovery, which would actually work in a modern environment and still be just as good as a defender.

I wouldn't have said the 2.2 tdci is a slow and noisy lump. Nor is it uneconomical for a near 2 ton lump that's shaped like a brick. Its quite simple to swap and change an engine to something more suited to your needs, be it speed, economy or noise.

And anyway, its a work horse, its rough around the edges because you wouldnt expect someone to be taking their perfectly painted disco 4 through a bog and up the side of a mountain on a weekly basis.

Compared to a lot of heavy duty cars out there its rather refined. land cruser with their colossal V8 that are miles from being economical to run in this country. Or Jeep with the small, nimble 4x4 that again, has a ruddy great big V8 in the front and isnt quite capable of providing the pulling power.

The original discovery is hardly a good example of a vehicle that works in a modern environment.... it takes a lot more work to look after the body work and stop it rotting away infront of your eyes, its not quite as capable off road due to ground clearance, and having carpted floors and leather seats is not the fitting finish for a rugged work horse.

we all need to drive ladas around. Problem solved ;)

defender is a work horse for farmers etc lr produce plenty of models 4x4s of more luxurious types, but only one utility

Used to be, but far too many have gone to Isuzu, Mitsi, Ford Ranger, etc., although they are not as capable as lr. The utility companies have been loyal as well, but some of them are now going to Jap. as well. I think this is what has caused the sales to fall so low as not to be considered viable now:(:(

I think they have done the opposite to skoda in that they have produced a reputation for being unreliable, despite the fact that new models have a pretty good life span. The old ones have proved they do. It used to be a very British thing to have a land rover, very patriotic, but times change, the new englishman is driving Japans cars and wearing china's clothes. So perhaps it doesn't fit in any more. Its not foreign enough to be British.

...... What a load of deep tosh but perhaps its true.
