Hi All,

I've acquired a Salisbury rear axle which has been modified to fit in a Series chassis, however, I would also like to upgrade the front axle. If I buy a Salisbury front axle from a coil sprung LR is it reasonably straight forward to modify and fit to my S2A? I can sort an improved braking system but I'm more concerned about how/if the steering will hook up.

If not, what alternative front axles or modifications to the original front axle are there that would work with the Salisbury rear axle?

Many thanks for any advice.

Series 109's were fitted with a Salisbury rear axle because they were expected to carry heavy loads, when the 90/110 came along it was dropped as standard fit because the full time 4 wheel drive system spread load between both axles. Only special vehicles like military SAS trucks [with heavy duty chassis] had Salisbury axles fitted as they were expected to suffer much abuse
I once fitted a Salisbury 109 rear to a SWB trialer with independent brakes ,it was just a case of welding spring mounts in the narrower SWB position.
I do not see fitting a Salisbury to a standard 2a as an upgrade, it is just more weight, less ground clearance and rarer parts.

I need something that will be reliable with more bhp/torque.

If the Salisbury isn't the one what else could I use or use and upgrade?

Cheers.

What engine do you have or are fitting ? Are you wanting improvements for road work or off road work ?
Some series had ENV axles but the are very rare today.

a salisbury axle was std fitment to 110s until 2004 parts are easily available

steering will be similar to how it is now, props length will need altering, welding the spring plate at the right angle to give 3 degrees castor will be were the effort is

tottot - GM L33 engine (mostly standard), GM4L80e gearbox (strengthened), LT230 (modified where possible) no particular use in mind, just doing it because I can and want to.

jamesmartin - I'm going to do the P38/Defender power steering conversion, happy with making new props, thanks for the tip on the castor required, that's just the sort of info. I'm after :)

Bobsticle - Defenders just don't do it for me, too new :)

Thanks for the comments and info so far.
