Looks like the wheels and tyres survived so you can rebuild it from the ground up.
That not bad idea.might actually get some. It all started with a burning smell then smoke coming through into cabin around my feet and dash. Couple mins before my feet were hot so turned heater down. thinking wasnt the heating could feel. Was on way to filling station aswell. 5 more min and would have been at a petrol pump
Knew nothing about it till it smelt. But if hadnt been for smoke in cabin wouldnt have thought anything about it as the farm at side road always burning things. Been offered a diesel on a 95.... have see how much&quick they pay out

When my Classic was stolen in Jan 2011 the Insurance Company paid out (after argument on how much it was worth - offered £750 less the remaining insurance premium so I would have had less than £500 paid to me - told them to not insult me, told them what the current market prices are for a '93/'94 Classic with EAS, Leather, LPG, Mem Seats, Dimming Mirrors, etc etc was at around £1500-£2000, they then came back a couple of hours later with a figure of £1745 less the premium remainder so I left with just under £1500 in the end, nearly 3 times the original offer....) but the whole process was about 7-8 weeks....not sure how it works with a fire, could pay out quicker as it is obviously not roadworthy or recoverable....
Sorry for your loss dude, but you're both safe that is the main thing.

Gutted to hear about the fire, like others have said at least you and the missus were ok.
Was in machine mart earlier and saw fire extinguishers for £15, reckon I'll dive back in there and pick one up!
Slight hijack but on a similar line...I've notice my heat shielding is all but worn away in lots of places...anyone recommend a reasonable priced material to replace/recover them?

Might have been bit different if had my 9kg powder out the van but would have never got to it with a small one with no hose. Im trained in use of fire extinguishers through old firm but even if had 9kg i would have had a go but was proberly too far gone to be worth the risks

I'm not sure a fire extingusher is worth carrying. Would you lift the hood on your car to put out an engine fire? The only thing I would be doing is looking for somewhere nice and safe to watch a range rover burn.

I've tackled several car fires, a petrol fire in a workshop and a burning lorry on the motorway. The only one we couldn't put out was the lorry fire (admittedly the petrol fire in the workshop was with a full size extinguisher). I carry 3 or 4 fire extinguishers in my landy.

ive got a powder one in my vw van,only costhey are prone to it and the fact my mates bay window went up in flames after he refitted the engine one day and had one handy...i was stood there watching the whole thing and how quick he managed to put it out.....of course it could have ended differently had he been driving it and not noticed till it had took hold.
never thought about having one in any of my other cars tho....hmm

Fair enough to have an opinion but this is risky advice. There could be a fire somewhere other than under the hood and the extinguisher might buy a trapped passenger a few extra seconds to get out.
If you followed the link in my earlier post you'll see I had exactly the same fire, only cottoning on when I saw smoke but I was saved because there was an extinguisher handy and yes, did pop the hood to get to it.
This then led to a lot of research before buying a full size extinguisher to keep in the car. The one that was used in the fire was a powder one. There are views on the net that powder is not suitable because the residue gets everywhere and can cause long term corrosion but I went for powder in the end because it got the job done and I decided that was more important than worrying about corrosion that might or might not take place 6 months later.
