Hi Guys,

I took the disco in for proper undersealing last week thinking that I'd got the corrosion issues sorted as the chassis and inner wings are all good.... oh boy was I wrong! Turns out the body has gone pretty dramatically in all the usual places. The intellegent thing to do would probably be abandon it but I'm too attached / in too deep to even consider that

The full list of repairs required are: (Pictures of Horror Show Attached)

Top of O/S Foot Well
O/S Outer & Inner Sill
O/S Rear Arch
N/S Front Arch
N/S Rear Arch
N/S Outer & Inner Sill
N/S Boot Floor
O/S Rear Body Mount
N/S Rear Body Mount
50p Hole Bottom of Front Chassis


To get all this sorted I've been quoted £5040 which is a bit of a gut punch! I wanted to get a second optinion based on your experiances on wether this is a fair price or I should explore other options to see if I can get it done cheaper elsewhere?
I could see about doing it myself but I've got no experiance or kit to do welding and not that much free time to work on it either so I'm not sure that'll be a particularly good idea if I want it done to a decent standard within the next year!

Any thoughts / advice is much appreciated!

You might get it a grand cheaper if you shop around, and are willing to travel, and possible wait a while until they can do the job.
On the other hand, You might not.

But for about half of that you could equip yourself with a very good MIG welder, a mask, wire, steel plates, tinsnips or a small grinder, teach yourself to weld, and do the job yourself.

Another option would be just to weigh it in, you might get 500 quid from a breakers. And you could get a not bad second hand vehicle for 5K.
 
Mainly just wanted to check I'm not getting ripped off, can't bring myself to let it go so I fear I'm going to do the unintellegent thing and get it done
 
Looking like it's time to learn 'On the Job Welding'??

Like me! And probably lots of Guys and Girls on here!! (Landrover owners in general) A lot of investment has gone into keeping our beloved Disco's 1+2s (and others) on the road!!

Before you surrender ££££'s! Try and bring the prices down?
As said above! Learn Welding! Make a start doing the bits that are pretty easy (I.e. flat bits and pieces) and leave the Fabrication/Intricate bits to the professionals (🤔) ppl! (If your able! Watch and learn tips from them?).

But!! The choices are there! It's your car??

You also have to remember that's an estimate. It will be more at the end I would bet.
The holes now are nothing to the holes you will end up with when rot removed.

Panels and mounts are available at quite reasonable prices now. Flat areas is plate.

Many project threads on here that show what can be done, if you have the space and spare car (you didnt say if it was a daily) to stand it and work.
I would go with, its a good time to buy a good welder and set to it. :).

Not an easy decision.

Thanks Kev, I'll have a good scour of google to get an idea of what cost I'd be looking at for DIY - if its worth it I might be joining the 'forced to learn welding' club, all part of the journey I guess!
I don’t want to put you off the diy route, as I would also recommend you do that. But there is a bit more to it than just learning to weld. If you have never used grinders etc they carry their own risks. You need to be able to recognise good metal from bad for welding. How much you can cut away without weakening the structure etc etc. You will also need a supply of gas (Hobby Weld ?) At that kind of money for a repair, I would suggest it’s too much !! Big decision to be made I think 🤔
 
Looking at them pics I get the feeling the pic taker has been pretty brutal with his small hammer/scraper, so what you see is the max what you hopefully find.
Most of it looks pretty straight forward, only tricky ones are the holes near any wiring, which means stripping the inside for access to protect the looms, something you could possibly do yourself.
I would say 5k is mental and then some, on the other hand I can see where they are coming from, weeks work, 100 an hour plus consumables etc = 5k.
You will also find most people do not like welding cars, so will price job high to get rid of the punter.

I could not bring myself to spend that money on a car for welding, unless it was something special.
 
Plenty of welding and a huge quote.
Can't say how correct and good that quote is, but no way I would scrap the car for that, bor would I pay that for the welding.

The D1 I just bought is waaaaay worse, and I am going to buy a welder, learn to weld etc.
I'd recommend You do the same.

My opinion only, as there really aren't too many discos around here.
 
Unfortunately it is my daily.... for now. I'm just starting process of finding something which will need less attention to run to replace it while I'm dealing with the disco

All your thoughts and advice is much appreciated, I'll be bringing it back home and will see about getting some alternative quotes for options. Chances are I'll be going down the DIY route and slowly chipping away at it though, skimmed over some build threads and think with enough practice and persevereance I've got a decent chance of getting at least the majority of it done myself. I'm confident on the spanners and grinders and am an engineer by trade so hopefully I'l be able to cobble something together

Either way I'll update as and when things happen

its amazing what you can do with a little practice, my Morris Minor, from photo 1 -4, and yes I think 5 g is over the top

Something I have been doing at work recently on truck floor paneis, 2mm steel plate, structural adhesive and 1/4 inch mono bolts.
Not sure if it is mot spec, but it is bloody strong.
 
5 grand is taking the pìss. If you don't like welding, why offer the service??
Because it is literally the crappiest mech work going.
I have done loads over the years, and more than once I have thought there is money to be made out of this.

They will price it high to not get the work, and if they get it, they will farm it out and charge a percentage for their cut.
 
It is definately reassuring that others have done the same

I can understand why businesses are inclined to charge so much, fairly high skilled work that takes ages and isnt enjoyable - I'd probably do the same if I was them!
