I bought my P38 from the auctions...cheap...so I expected problems.
It had an annoying top end tick so I knew a new cam etc was required but it soon became evident that the problem was more serious.....a cracked block...........there's always a reason why P38's are thrown through the auctions.
Anyway, pressure tested block acquired from Emmetts with a pair of skimmed heads and off I went. New rings and bearings, valves, followers, rods, rockers etc.

And it started first time:
Should run like new....until it breaks down.
Still owes me less than £1,500 and I know the engine is good.
Now, on to the next job on the list.
