I am planning a good few days away with 2 other motors and was wondering what methods/apps/clubs do you all use.

I am using OS to lay the route but these do not show unclassified lanes.(trying to link up dead end byways that look like they continue onto unclassified/unpaved roads)

How do you all get along using Trail wise/Glass maps ?

Any other map apps that show all this info?

Also what are you paying for the services? Are they worth it
(Have no trouble with the OS app as easy route marking & about £25/year,can share any maps) use this app for horse/cycle events planning.

I use Outdoor active and council online maps. Bit long winded maybe but once you have a few routes your ok, just look at the council maps every now and again for updates. FREE!
Where you thinking about going?

Wiltshire to Harlech/north wales over 4 days.
Looking over some routes and round Builth wells and they are dead ends.
Other problems I will have is I may not have drove/seen these lanes before

Does the outdoor active show unclassified roads?

If you search the name on the photo look at the lanes around it you can see my problem.

You can drive that lane up to Claerwen reservoir.
You can drive the lane running round the top of the reservoir but it's a dead end as far as I am aware, even though there is a non described track at the end .

I like Trailwise - it's especially handy for the comments against lanes with the condition, whether they're suitable for 4x4s, and hints/tips for driving them.
It shows BOATS and UCRs with usually up to date info about TROs and TTROs.

It's helpful for planning but doesn't track your live location so you'd still need to use OS Maps for when you're actually out and about.

Do you still get trail wise through GLASS membership?

I keep finding routes like this and look around to see if there is ways through.
Think I will need to spend some time on council ROW sites. Plenty of practice on the wilts one

James could probably tell you for sure on the one running around the top of the Claerwen, I have driven some of it.

James, what other benefits, apart from mapping, do you get?
Friend was in it a few years back and said it was pretty dead and not worth the money. That's why we have never bothered to join it.
@Anaconda - Take a look at these two links which describe what GLASS does and lists some member benefits, other than access to TrailWise of course:

Had a Quick Look and there are reports of that track been private & police were there turning bikes around a few years ago.

Off again to see who owns it & polite emails may be sent

Good luck, I get the feeling 4x4s are very much disliked in the area, well most areas to be fair and in general I can understand that.
PM me your email and I will try and send you a route, if I can (not very good at tech stuff)

If you can convert these to gpx files it will be good.

I have gone looking/verifying lanes on the Motobike and had no worries & chatted with a few gate owners. Turn up in a 4x4 and they forgot who you are.

Yes but if you turn up with a group of 20 motorbikes (seems like the usual amount) then you would get the same negative attitude. I see more bikers than 4x4s and in general they go as fast as possible with little regard to anyone else. Of course that's a generalisation.

You get some discounts on sites like JGS, Thunderpole, some insurance companies etc.

For me it's worth it for Trailwise, but GLASS do some good work fighting lane closures and sometimes organising repairs to keep as many lanes open as possible so I like that the membership cost goes to supporting that too.

@jamesDisco TD5

Let’s see a bit of TW in action….
Can you look at Builth wells and give me a general screen shot of lanes/bridal ways in the area. If it’s any good I will join
Thanks for your help

The Upper Claerwen byway ends at Claerwen, but there's a private link road at the end owned by the Elan Valley Trust that goes through to a UCR. You can email Elan Valley for a permit to drive the link road.

Shown here between the red (Upper Claerwen) and green (open section of UCR).
