I have a 1999 1.8 petrol freelander which has approx 20,000 miles on the engine ( replaced by dealer before I bought it) It has developed a running problem which is not always noticable. When cold mostly it runs very rich like its on full choke and has stalled a couple of times at junctions and been very hard to re start. Its been in to local dealer and had rotor arm replaced but it is no better. Below 4000 runs very rich, when cold mostly and takes for ever to pick up. Also top speed foot to the floor is about 90 will not go past 4500 in 5th gear also very loud in side over 4000. does the flexible joint on the exhaust contribute to anything if its leaking?

it runs very rich like its on full choke: Get the choke adjusted!

foot to the floor is about 90 will not go past 4500 in 5th gear: Jesus H Corbet, it's a Land Rover Freelander, not a Ferrari. If you want speed sell it.

The way you are going you will be back on here next week telling us your head gasket has blown.

Its not the top end thats an issue , I do seem to get passed by other freelanders which makes me think mines slower than it should be. Its the rich running from cold which it never used to do and it just seems very sluggish in the lower rev range as for adjusting the choke , if I knew the answer I would have tried it, I asked the question because I thought I may have got some sort of help from fellow owners not sarcasm

I am not trying to meat out any sarcasm, just telling you to look at the choke ffs.

If you want to see some sarcasm stick around, i'm sure someone will be happy to dish some up for you.

Try changing Temp Transmitter first,( its the one with 2 wires in the connector, this goes to ECU.if that fails you need TEST BOOK on it as this will tell you if the problem is elsewhere,or the ECU itself.

have a look at the rubber pipe between the air filter nd yer engine.. i had the same problem on mine and when it came down to it the problem was dust gettin in the engine through the cracked hose. Got that replaced some months ago and it runs sweet as a nut now. This was on KV6 mind, but just have a squeeze of yer hose nd any cracks will make themselves shown. Its supprising how much difference it made.

yet another sensitive ickle bunny stumbled across the forum 'cos he had a problem, and got upset 'cos someone said something nasty, and didn't offer to rush round his house and fix his freelander for nowt

My TD4 is very quiet and still pulls like a train at 90mph. Have had 110 out of it on the flat & felt like it still had more. Solution to your problem - Get a TD4.

Cheers

(Sorry, just back from the pub - about as helpful as I'm likely to get...)

Evening redhand,
as usual...... a diplomatic, well thought out aanswer that dosn't pull any punches. :D

Thanks for all the advise, got the problem sorted it was the Exhaust, needed new down pipes ,intermediate pipe and new cat, the cat had started to disintegrate and was obstructing the flow. Pulls like a train now , acceleration really good, cruises at 90 fuel economy back up , its like a new car

Glad your sorted mick...........

Gas flow through the 1.8 and V6 is a big issue. Any deterioration in the gas flow pre or post combustion does have a big effect.

Technically you should be able to hit the limiter in every gear

As a new member you should have been given a bit of slack from the other troops.

yeh I know if you havnt got a sense of humour you shouldnt be here but I was totally at a loss and hoped it might have been something simple that I could have sorted out myself, it does rev all the way now which looking back was something it would never do when I bought it, thanks for the support.
