Hi
My 2002 TD4 manual has recently developed a fault as follows:
Starts on the button hot or cold.
Once started it smokes and idles badly (worst when cold)
When driven it feels like there is no power until the turbo kicks in, again worst when cold.
Once warmed up (after about 10 - 15 minutes) then idle is OK but still has power hole on pickup, makes pulling out of junctions a bit hit and miss, although no where near as bad when cold.

Glow plugs?
Injector dodgy?

Engine recently serviced - oil filters, breather etc - had no effect on this fault, also all vacuum hoses changed.

I would say possible injector is engine light on. Won't be glow plugs on the td4 as engine should never need them

Hi
No warning lights up.
Starts first time but smokes and idles unevenly not much happens when you floor the throttle - just smoke and unhappy engine. Eventually picks up, but not happy.

Once warmed up it is 100% better and drives OK but still has huge power hole before the turbo kicks in and still smokes slightly - not gross, but more than I would expect.

Our 1.9TDi Alhambra with 250K on it is absolutely clean when revved and goes like stink compared with this TD4

Update:

Engine now idling badly when warm, but actually drives Ok when revs kept above 1500.

I disconnected each injector in turn with the engine idling, and injector 2 has no effect when disconnected. 1,3 and 4 make the idle much worse.

So I guess I have a dodgy injector 2.

These are marked up as 0445 110 049 injectors but I see from Mr Google that some cars have 0445 110 030 fitted.

Can I mix and match these because the '030' ones seem to be cheaper than the '049' variant.

What is the difference between the '049' and the '030' types?

Good point no, I haven't tried that, I do have the ability to look at the MAF output via diagnostic port - what are normal readings for a known good MAF and the Freelander?

Don't know the readings, but unplug it and if your engine settles down, its that. If not keep looking.

Tried the MAF disconnect makes no difference.

Just been for a 100 mile run and the car is fine so long as you have some load on the engine or are on over run.

It doesn't like partial throttle or idling, definitely injector 2 that is playing up, disconnecting it makes has no change on the idle, the others do.

Time for another injector I guess.

Ok, got hold of another injector from Ebay, pulled out No.2 all beautifully greased up - thank you previous owner/garage. popped in the injector, all solved.

probably took 25 minutes from opening the bonnet to closing it!

after reading some horror stories about stuck injectors etc...got off very lightly!

Waiting for next bit to fall off or fail :D
