Trawled through some older posts, but presuming there might some newer tents on the market now.

I have looked at a few websites, there seems to be a few different products.
I need a four man, to go on a 110 Station Wagon.

Does it make a difference to what roof rack you have? (probably find out now, I put the wrong one on!! but did my research, & went for what I thought was the best expedition rack)

Any advice/recommendations much appreciated :D

Hi,

Looks like you've got a patriot or Hannnibal rack? Both decent racks.

As for a 4 man roof tent, depends on the size of the 4 men! :) I haven't seen a 4 man (Adult) single roof tent, but I have seen a double roof tent;

Howling Moon - Rooftop and Trailer Tents - Tourer other makes available, though I have the 1.4m version and recommend them. And dont forget a double roof tent would take up nearly the whole rack, and could weigh in excess of 100kilos. Or you could get 2 single tents.

Hope it helps, cheers

Hi Lis,

just to give you some ideas. I have decided for a Howling Moon 1.6 Tourer (Howling Moon - Rooftop and Trailer Tents - Tourer) and it's comfortable for myself and my 2 daughters (6+10). It's opening over the back door. The Tourer allows entering & leaving of the tent in dry conditions, even it is raining. The 1.6 has the advantage that it's not wider than the Defender itself. I'm not shure about the 1.8.

I believe for 4 persons you''ll need the 1.8 (this one is sometimes available) or the family version 2.4. I have also seen the Urs' Defender from www.xp-edition.ch, having mounted 2 x Howling Moon. I bought also his roof carrier.

You can see some of my pictures on Facebook: Bernd Köhler's Photos - Land Rover Defender | Facebook

I can recommend reading the web site from Diego: + satara offroad +
He inspired me as well.

The UK importer is as follows: Specialist 4x4 Expedition Equipment - Trek Overland

Hope it helps. In case you like to know more just let me know.

Regards,
Bernd

Thanks Onelife & Bernd,

Very helpful indeedy :D Gonna have a good look at all your info now.

Cheers

Had a good looky! They all look fantastic.

BUT..............the sites are not very good when it comes to close pics, explanations & diagrams etc...........

Does anyone know if there are any UK dealers who have them on show/demo.
Think I really need to physically see one, before I buy, the sites just do not detail them enough.

Lisa,

Get yourself to the landy shows next year before you commit to anything. They are big bucks new and not something you should buy without seeing. Climb inside, have a lie down and see if its for you. RTT's are not for everyone and no one tent will suit all needs and environment conditions.

I would also seriously consider the size. why do you need a 4 man tent? that is alot of high up weight, maybe there is a way around it? Welsh lanes and RTT's do not mix to well... trust me.

G

Hi G,

Thanks for that, shows.....good idea, will definatley do that, I am in no rush, and definatley agree you need to see exactly what your buying.

Only thinking of the four, due to two pesky kids!! 11 & 8yrs.
I have a huge 12 man tent for camping trips, it's a pain the ass to put up! also I like to do different places some nights, it's only worth putting up if your doing quite a few nights in one place.

Someone!!!! told me, the rooftops are so easy to use, go up & down quickly, & might suit me better, especially now with the 110.

But a good landy show is the thing to do!
So thanks again, really appreciate it.

Cheers
Lis

an Oz tent might meet your requirements more with kids then. The weight of a large RTT or 2 RTT's will be substantial and a PITA to fit/remove when not needed (unless you have a forklift on the farm?) Either way, look at the Oz tents, quick to setup/takedown and can also be stored on the roof. Ideal.

G

My thoughts exactly, but Griff got there first! :) OZ tent, Caranex, there are some very good larger tents that you can attach to the side/back of a 110 easily, so you have a tent and a annnex. That means you can go for a drive and leave the tent erect, rather than take it down each time.

No matter how good a roof tent, you won't be able to stand up in it, unless your very veritically challenged; sometimes it's nice to dress standing up!

i got a prime tent from ebay, big enough, tough, cumfy, and good price
pm me your email and i will send on some photos

Wow, those Oz tents look fab, thanks G. Not looked at that type, but a very good option.

The Caranex is also good, thanks Onelife, and your right, with a roof top, your kinda stuck!

PMed my email, thanks Shadowster.

Thanks guys, your all soooooooooo helpful!

Thanks for the pics Shadowster, much appreciated.

How many can you sleep in there?
Did have looky on fleabay, £300 now!

i had a standard roof rack which i hacked to bits then attached that to the roll bars so that it's easily removable whilst leaving the bars in place, obviously with suitable lifting gear. these tents are from fleabay, and have to say excellent quality, cost just over a grand for the two. Lee

I love the idea of the roof tops, but practically, not sure I will manage it on my own?
Me thinks you need a big strong man around! (which I hate to admit! lol)

Obviously very heavy, so thinking an Oz tent might be much more practical for me.

Are you open to offers Austen? as you can get the Prime techs new on fleabay for that.

What brand are those bevhelee?

They are 399 plus 100 postage (from germany so no choice on postage) on ebay, i bought it off the company selling them on there now. But yes, open to offers. Its is like new. Oh and if you are interested, i'm near Ludlow in shropshire so not far from mid wales, and i'll even help you lift it onto the roof ;)

they are prime techs, they are made in China, but what isn't nowadays? I'm very impressed with them, in fact we are leaving for South Africa in January so will keep you informed as to how we get on. Lee
