'Ere give it a rest he misunderstood valve clearnaces as tappet cleanrances. Fair play to him for doing the rebuild, rather than getting someone else to do it, how else do you learn! To be honest, just cos he mis-understood summat doesn't make him stupid. Fair play to him to notice also and ask for advise, not just to bash on regardless, he did the right thing and doesn't need "I think it's gona go woosh right over his head." comments!

Thanks for the help, PM'd you my email. T'was just a mis-understanding on my part!

Bloody hell I'm not totally thick! I've rebuilt my engine once and it's still running sound (the bores and pistons still look like new), all abide the silly mistake that I made with the head gasket goo from advice that I was given over the net  That's now rectified and I will be adjusting my tappets as per usual. I would have been doing that anyway, but from some of your posts about "winding down" and all that (which is making things a lot more difficult than they need to be!), I thought I was missing something. I just sat the rocker on, kept an eye on all the pushrods and tightened it down evenly, bit by bit up to torque. The two valves (with pushrods which were sat proud on the lobe) compressed the valve springs etc. etc., so all is well.

What clearance do I need on the tappets though? I can't remember which feeler gauge I used last time I did it

Thanks for all the advice

Reet pos stop bull****tin, rebuilt the engine my arse. Yer want to get this engine back working agin, fine we can help.

If yer sitting with all the torque settings why have yer not got the tappet settings as well, not knowing that the rockers normally sit like they did is giving the game away pos.

Setting the tappets is tricky, if yer dunt know how just ask, dunt guess it, the rule of 9 is the hard way, yer wanting to set them in pairs, four turns of the engine.

If yer aint torqued the head then start again, no point just romping it down wif a socket, it will just blow again, can't make yer a mechanic but can teach yer a few basics if you want, got all the time in the world mate, by the time yer 19 yel be up to 1st year apprentice crash course, maybee yel chuck the ****e biology when yer leave school and do a real job mechanicing .

Of course maybee I'm wrong and yel tell me to fook off.

I have rebuilt my engine, why would I not have done? I bought my land rover for the sole purpose of having a hobby and a cool car to drive. It should be youngsters like me that you are encouraging to follow you in your foot steps rather than down heartening and winding up, I'm not some dickhead chav speeding round in a little nova with no insurance causing mayhem and crashing all the time ffs. When I bought the 90 the engine injested a flakey piece of metal from the filter box housing which knackered a piston and left a load of little imprints on the head. The garage repaired this under the 3 month warranty that they provided me with and then anything after that has been done by myself. The engine did spew oil out all over the place before (there's loads of my topics on here about the planning, going about and after thoughts of pretty much everything that I've done, including the rebuild and timing belt changes etc. so don't say I haven't done it) which is why I wanted to sort the problem out. I've always been interested in tinkering with stuff, and engines are my new hobby - why do you have a problem with that?

I've torqued the head down as it should be working from the centre out in a spiral, bit by bit until it was tightened right down as to not warp or damage the head. As for the tappets, I am going to do what you said (run the engine for 15 - 20 seconds) and adjust them as per your method. Last time I just adjusted them as they sat after a couple of turnovers of the engine (which was down to luck and chance at getting them right). It's not a major deal what so ever and it doesn't seem to have done any harm last time I did it, and that was a full short engine rebuild (excluding crank, oil pump etc.). The only stupid mistake is that I put gasket goo on the head (which I thought was the right thing to do), but I have sorted that now and it wont be done again.

I'll only learn from my mistakes by trying things so stop digging at me. Considering you're a mechanic, you must have been in my shoes at one time and you will no doubt have learned everything that you know from someone older than you, someone who most probably wasn't being a patronising arse hole.

Leave me be :(

Thats it pos you tell em. Know how you feel I was pulled up by not putting full stops and commers in once. So dont feel offended, just some people get the wrong end of the stick sometimes.

Ere Pos, don't worry, i can promise you that everyone on here has nothing but the utmost respect and understanding for you, and for your enthusiasm towards the common cause that is LR! It is really reassuring to know that whilst all the old fogies fall off the end of the conveyor belt, there are still people stepping on at the beginning to make it all worthwhile, and everyone appreciates that!

Don't forget, 90% of communication is not in the words, it's in how they are said, which makes the internet a very two-dimensional place. I am sure that if something has been said which is offensive, what was actually meant was lost in the 90% which doesn't come across on an internet forum, and that underlying what seemed rude was nothing intended to be other than banter and of course admiration for the fact that you are as enthusiastic about your cause...oh and of course a WELL hidden jealousy that you are still as youthful as you are!!! :D

Fooking ell OD I wint have gone that far :D

Brilliant haha :D

Well she fired up straight away after a bit of turning to get fuel back into the system I didn't even need to pre-heat, so compression must be good. Don't know whether or not the problem is fixed yet because I haven't had chance to take her for a run, but there was no pressure when putting my thumb over the dip stick tube :)

I'll report back later
Thanks for all the help and support as usual!

So you're taking the huff then.

no problem, rant over now ill go back to my corner now... :)

It was meant as a polite way of saying he won't understand, considering he seemed to have no understanding of why certain valves were holding the rocker shaft up, what you mean. He also indicated that he had never adjusted anything after the engine rebuild and so on, along wif silicone all over the head gasket.

If I offended him it was not meant that way, in actual fact I complimented him in my last thread and offered endless support if he wants it, or to tell me to fook off.
