Its not a road tax either, very little of it goes into roads, its a car tax. Road tax was abolished in the 1930's by Churchill.

"Entertainments may be taxed; public houses may be taxed… and the yield devoted to the general revenue. But motorists are to be privileged for all time to have the tax on motors devoted to roads? This is an outrage upon… common sense."

So, thanks for that Winston, instead of funding the building and maintaining of roads, public transport and research in new greener transportation technologies our road tax now buys our politicians second homes in London and bombs to indiscriminately drop on innocent family's , schools and hospitals in far away places.
