Hearing rumours that the road tax is being (stealthily) hiked to very high levels, for example a 1996 300 tdi disco could expect a rise from £235 to upwards of £600 - £700. Hoping that I am wrong.

Where did you hear this?

If you are talking about the new changes to VED , then they only affect new cars.

Cheers

Article in a South Wales Sunday paper.

If you do a search for Tax over the last 4 months it has been discussed a few times on here with links to the .gov websites. A lot of the news outlets seem to have written it as a horror story.

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I was begining to think after 7 land rovers (series 1 1952 to disco tdi 1996) my last one could be consigned to the scrap heap after rebuiling the inner shell - HORRORS!

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story
As said, only applies to vehicles first registered on or after April 1st.
The only vehicles to qualify for zero tax (currently under 100 gm/km) will be electric cars (not hybrids) assuming they have a list price not exceeding 40k. & those first registered before January 1st. 1977.

'Don't think you could change car tax retrospectively' - o yes they do that. My 2001 Forester was taxed more highly because it was built before August. The same model later in the year was cheaper. That was done two years after I had bought it. Don't underestimate the tax-man!

It's the small print, journalists never bother with the small print because it gets in the way of their 'alternative facts'

Come to think if it, what about the increases Gordon Brown put onto fuel duty, because, diesel is a pollutant. I think it was 5% over budget inrease for a good number of years. Tax man, correct name Robin the HOOD.

Too right ! A car such as the Toyota Aygo & it's PSA brothers bought new up to 31st March is VED free due to their low emissions. The same car bought on April 1st will cost £120 for the first year & £140 thereafter :(
