have ya got a manual for it ? its quite difficult to explain gates but here goes in the wat i hope is a way ya can understand
the gates are the slots were the gear shift for reverse has to be pushed through, its the resistance you feel when aimin for reverse , bit like shovin a bar between to spring loaded bearings .its also wat stops ya accidently hittin reverse whilst driving forward . i personally if that way inclined strip the tunnel out so ya can really have a good look at exactly wats happening .realisticly the build up of **** is not likely to be the prob or it would have been more of a progressive prob rather than something thats just appeared and stayed .
lt77 boxes is more of my dads thing so i in all honestly cant say which linkage its likely to be ,(id ask him but hes on a jollie in hong kong for 2 weeks )how ever r380 box its usually the last linkage that wears on the plastic collars
if its poppin out with a bang its def not travelling all the way so ya can narrow it down to gear travel and pretty much rule out an internal gear failure
with out seeing it its hard to diagnose but if it was i id have the tunnel out and try holdin it in reverse using hand to feel just wats happenin , best of luck see how ya go and if poss up date ya progress the more info i get the better the advice will be
