Anybody out there willing to post on here the procedure required to change the water pump and viscous fan on a p38 2.5 tdi.

I should be picking up the parts including the special spanner tomorrow from island. 4x4 @ £132.

Thanks

Mike.

Mike,

I haven't got a clue.....but both clarky130 and zzr100 have been posting on threads about it....maybe a PM or a search will bring it up?

If not Sanitv8, Wammers or Datatek will be along with the answer shortly....

My previous post was a bit of a bum-steer....

The Thread on the Diesel is Left Handed (the opposite to normal..!!) according to the manual.

I have copied the extracts from the manual for you....

  • Drain Coolant
    Remove Radiator
    Remove VC Fan
    Unbolt the Water Pump
    Reverse to refit

As per the attached sections from the Workshop Manual....

Hope it helps dude.

Wow, to be mentioned in the same breath as these two fine gents is a true compliment....how do I post that in my signature??? cos I just gotta keep that...

Cheers J....you have sooooo made my day!!

Remove bolt holding window washer bottle filler neck and just move out of the way as required. (left hand side)

Remove bolt holding power steering fluid reservoir and just slightly move of the way. (right hand side)

Drain Rad via plug in bottom

Undo the rad hoses and move out of the way.

Loosen fan hub from water pump (left hand thread, loosens by turning clockwise, 36 mm spanner???), remove the 2 spring clips from the top of the radiator cowl, now undo the fan hub fully and remove fan assembly/cowling as one unit.

Undo oil cooler pipes from bottom of radiator.

Remove the 2 bolts holding bottom of radiator to mounting brackets (1 each side)

Now remove radiator from the top. ie up wards

Iv'e undone everything that is attached to the radiator except one Feckin bolt at the bottom that holds the rad in place. The nut is also turning so having some trouble there even when i try to wedge with a screw driver.

Any ideas how to get the Feckin bolt off.

There's always one bolt that plays up.

Mike.

The bottom side bolts should be captive. If the weld has broke and it's no longer captive, then best bet is to cut the head off with an angle grinder.

you dont need to remove the rad, oil cooler pipes or the washer bottle filler neck it can all be done in place if you undo the fan that can sit in the housing and you can undo the pulley, and the pump and replace easy enough the hardest part i found was getting the viscous fan to start on the thread again but it does go back with a bit of swearing lol

I had the same problem with mine this morning. I ended up knocking a screwdriver up the side of it to wedge it in place.
As you say, there's always one bolt that gives you a head ache.

Thank you for the info.
Unfortunately it was too small to read and it could not be zoomed.

Mike.
You did click on the images to open them up, or click on them again to open full screen or save them for printing??

They are quite large and will print upto A3 if needed....

Or you could download RAVE from here which is where they came from in the first place....

Cut mine off with a dremel.

Cut mine off with a dremel.

Yea just done before I read your post.... Lol

Now need to try and get the rest of the bolt shaft off with a junior hack saw blade cos I can't get the dremel to it.

I can only lift the rad out half way because of the friggin bolt.

You have to laugh or you'll go mad.... Lol

Once the rad is out I'll flush it through and use my little compressed to clean between the fins.

Cut the bolt shaft off with junior hack saw blade.....took ages.

I can lift the rad but the locating cleats at the bottom are now getting stuck on the viscous fan.
Should the Viscous fan be taken off first?

Yes take the viscos fan off with cowling at the same time it's awkward but gives you more access and less chance or damaging the radiator fins
