Okay so I turned 17 a couple weeks ago and am starting driving lessons tomorrow!!!!
For my birthday, @accyroy passed down his seven seater discovery 2 to me for my first car, however it is a bit run down and battered, therefore whilst I'm doing my lessons we will also be repairing it together
I am so excited and I'll be using this thread to post pictures and show updates of how it's coming along!

I've never ever ever even tried to drive a car so i am a bit nervous but if anyone has any tips on how to pass and learn quickly then pls let me know!!!!

This is probably not the best of tips, but I borrowed my mothers car anytime she wasn´t around. That stopped abruptly one day when my dad unexpectedly came home early from work (he owned a traffic school). As I tell my kids - Don´t do as I did, do as I tell you to do. Good luck with the rebuild

ok so, today i tried to drive the disco for the first time. stalled it almost immediately and killed the battery completely
soooo, after searching around on the forum for a while to see what people say is best, we have ordered a new battery and in the meantime we replaced the roof bar seals which have been causing leaks for quite a while now. as you can see in the pictures, the old seals were pretty grim to say the least, but now the new ones have been fitted so fingers crossed theres no more leaks.
(i think its important to mention that this car has already had very many things replaced over the course of the past couple years where it has been stood without a purpose, and the leaks never stopped lol so we're hoping these seals were the root of the problem)
anyways, here are some pics
nothing too interesting but i want to have pics of every step of the way so that I can look back on it

will update again when battery comes

battery came today!
first job of the day was to wash away the multiple years of built up mud, gutted I forgot to take photos of what it looked like before but oh well you’re just gonna have to believe me that it was really filthy.
anyways we bought This Battery and it was a perfect fit. went straight in, connected the terminals, clamped it in place and the car started with ease.


next, we replaced the solar panel controller. because this car has been stood for ages, it had solar panels installed so that it would still be receiving energy but the controller and stuff were faulty and had been draining the battery instead of the opposite. so we installed a new one, and attached a remote screen which turned out to be a waste of time as it was faulty too but its fine at least we got the main part sorted.
after we were done with that, we went over what it failed on its most recent MOT - which was quite a few things, but we’ll be focusing more on them next week.


now we have ordered:
new front and back windscreen wipers
a new mass air flow sensor

and over the past few days, @accyroy also dug up some bits from the disco that were hidden away in the garage that we can use to fix the problems with the air flow and EGR next time we work on it.

also, we checked all the lights and found out that left indicator and reverse lights don’t work. Took some bits apart, put them back together and indicator started working but the reverse lights were completely gone, in technical terms they have ‘corroded contacts on the lamp assembly’, idrk what that means but basically we need a new lamp assembly lol.

also, something we remembered today was that the disco has an elevated suspension. @accyroy did it a while back so that it would be better for off-roading, but I won’t be able to get insured on a first car with such modifications, so we are going to have to undo all of that and bring it back down unfortunately

we also took a trip to Halfords for some bits and bought this amazing sticker which I really feel the need to show off. haha


overall we have had a very good day, even though it doesn’t seem like we did loads, it took us some time and we have made progress. I can’t wait for the next parts to come and carry on!!!

definitely keep a log in this thread - it makes for great reading when you have owned it for years. I look back at my project thread and discover things I forgot I had done!

Over the past few days we did a lot!
to begin with we had to unscrew many many many many nuts and bolts, thank god for WD-40 !!!
we took the rear and front bumpers off (a lot easier said than done) and dropped them off at painters to get them powder coated.
they were a state.

we then decided it was time to begin on sorting the suspension.
last week we ordered new shock absorbers and springs, when we took off the front two wheels and saw how small the new shock absorbers are compared to the ones on the car we were pretty confused.

took us a while but we removed everything. It was a nightmare. took so much longer than we were expecting but so glad its done now.

we attempted to begin on the rear end but after removing the shock absorber on one side we discovered that the years of rust had made some of the nuts and bolts weld into all one piece so we soaked it in wd40 and left it for next time,
writing this it feels like we haven’t done much but we was at it alll day, I’m pretty sure I’ve missed out so many things that we’ve done but oh well
We have barely anything to do left so hopefully will be finished soon and be on the road

okay so, we've pretty much nearly finished on the car already..
the plan was that we would be working on it whilst i was learning and it would be finished by the time i was able to drive
however
ive done quite a few weeks of lessons now and done barely anything, pretty convinced my instructor was just mugging me off lol
soooooooo thanks to that
i wont be driving for a good few months yet
but i've got a new instructor, so I'm hoping they will be better!
anyways
over the weekend, we put both bumpers back on. a LOT easier said than done.
then we replaced the mass air flow sensor, and put in new bulbs for the rear lights.
next we used a nanocom to adjust both sides of the car to the same height and then we test drove it!
it was all going okay at first
but
obviously that would be too good to be true
and after a couple minutes the clutch started making some properly horrid noises
soooooooo
we're going to take it to someone who actually knows what they're doing to tell us whats wrong and what we need to do next.

in the meantime, here are some nice photos of it

@accynina loads of good info there. Have you got anyone lined up for the clutch? If not, try Jimmy’s garage near church. He looks after my defender and is a top chap.

For future ref use a 50/50 atf to acetone mix it's the best release agent...WD40 stands for water dispersel and took them 40 attempts to get it right...nice looking Disco..keep up the good work...
