hi.

I have a P38 2.5DT.
Fluid has been running low for last week or so and tomorrow im going to renew the fluid. just got a 5 litre bottle of fluid from a mate so im sure i got enough.

what i want confirmed is the order of bleeding on these cars. i've only ever bled small cars but i have been told these have a different bleeding order.
also want to get new fluid in for the clutch. am i right in saying it runs from the same tank as brake fluid???
if so where about is the bleed nipple on the clutch??

how much fluid does it take to flush the system. been told about 2 ltrs???

aint looked at none of it yet so cant think of anything else to ask. hopefully this will be a simple job. usually is. but then again this is a RR :).

anything else i should no would be great.

It's nothing like bleeding the brakes on a normal car. The correct proceedure is given in RAVE and should be followed to the letter:D
 
according to the rave, when bleeding the brake you dont bleed the back ones. you bleed from the front then bleed from the master cylinder.

is this right. seems odd.

Think you have read it wrong. Normal methond of bleeding is to start at wheel furthest from master cylinder and work towards it. On the P38 you start at the master cylinder and work back to the furthest bleeder from it.

As wammers says, you've definitely read it wrong. Start at the master cylinder, then the front calipers, then back to the master cylinder (different bleed points to the first time), then to the rear calipers, then finish off at the front calipers. Some you do with ign on, some with it off. Read and digest and follow to the letter. (Did you miss the second page before?)
 
omg what a dippy prat i am. this is what happens when you got a pregnant wife at home that dont let ya sleep cos they spread out in the bed.
now i have caught up on sleep i see my mistake. bit confusing as this type of bleeding is all new to me but i will print the page off and get to grips with it and hopefully all will go well tomorrow.

first few weeks are hard, sub consciously you listen to them breath, when your little one is born you will not know what hits you.
But as they grow every day has a new surprise, Ours will be three in December and is honestly the best thing in our lives.

I'm so sorry to interrupt on such a lovely moment, but can someone confirm how much fluid it takes to completely flush the system ? :welcome2:

About two litres should do it. TIP. Siphon as much old flud as you can out of reservoir and fill it with fresh stuff before starting.;)

Well think about it. The less dirty fluid you have it the tank the better. The fluid level has to be maintained as you bleed as the dirty fluid goes down you add clean to it. It takes longer to get clean fluid through the system because each time you top up the new fluid gets mixed with the dirty stuff. If you take most of the old fluid out of the tank and fill with new clean, none contaminated clean fluid is replaced in the tank sooner and gets through the system quicker.
 
Job done, took me less than 2 litres (1.75lt I'd say), thanks to Wammers' tip.
Followed RAVE to the letter, but I was left with two questions:
After bleeding the rear calipers it says to run the ABS pump until it stops and then to push the pedal 5 times. Is it supposed to push the pedal with the pump on or off ? Because my pump comes on every 4th or 5th push and I was stuck in a loop. Eventually I turned the ignition off and then pushed the pedal 5 times and moved on.
Second question: after the pushing the pedal 5 times, I bled the front calipers but I never got any air in the pipe. I suppose that if the system is properly bled this is not a problem ?

Bottom line, this was a (very) messy job but well worth it. My Rangie now has a very firm pedal and breaks as soon as I press it :D
 
still aint got round to doing my brakes. dad came round with his lil pug 106 again. what a lil **** that car is. im sick of it but been working on that all. hopefully i can get some time spare to do it tomorrow.

would be nice to hear about the abs question so i no for when i do the brakes tho.
