Hi, I'm after a little advice, my wheel bearing knackered last week,I've got the replacement ready to fit but upon removing the wheel/centre hub the bearing has welded itself to the stub axle, and am unable to remove stub axle or hub, any one had this happen? And how did you go about removing it without dismantling the axle? Cheers in advance
 
You will need a cutting / grinder disk to cut a diagonal groove in the inner race (nearly to full depth) then use a cold chisel to split it along the groove. If it has welded to the stub then the stub itself might be toast too !
 
Worth using blow torch / heat gun as have had success in the past using heat to loosen up stubborn bearings / fittings etc.
Usually still needs a bit of brute force but worth a try...make sure you cant set light to stuff though!!!

+1 heats your best first option. Failing that you'll have to pull the hub off over the bearing to get at the inner race. Can be a right PITA as you usually need to lever it in at least 3 places at once.
 
Ah may have misread your original post, do you mean the outer bearing (under the nut) as opposed to the inner (by the grease seal)?
 
Will get some gas for the blowtorch and try the heat method, tried pulling hub but it ain't budging!! I will perservere with it before I launch a full on assault and chop the f##ka up,
Which I don't wanna do! Trying to keep costs down!
 
Does anyone know the correct part number for the front hub it's a 1990 defender 90 2.5d
I don't want to order the wrong un, cheers :)
 
Front of axle on tube is axle number

Or go by chassis number if the axles are original.
 
Ok what brand is the best choice? They start at £30 for a all makes, bearmach £60 or landrover £130 all come with 12 month guarantee.
Will bearmach be a good option or should I replace with lr oem?

I usually buy the OEM from these guys, make doesnt matter if its OEM cos it came from the same factory, just reboxed. (same as LR original buit without extra ££ for a box with an LR badge on it.)

Id guess at the £60 version, but id check.
if you dont get from LRdirect, just make sure its OEM and check for the "G" on the end of the part number when it arrives.

Yes that's the website I was looking at, will go for the bearmach it's a reputable brand & with 12 months guarantee should be ok, I hope!

Is it a front or back stub axle?

Have you managed to get the hub off?

From previous comments I am under the impression that the outer bearing race is welded to the stub, and you can't get the hub off.

Please clarify!
 
That's correct oldseadog, front hub won't budge so I'm going to chop it off and replace as it will prob be damaged anyway:)
 
So it's a replacement stub axle, hub, bearings and oil seals?

Not too difficult a job as long as you can get the hub off to get to the bolts.

This is where you find that you can't undo the brake caliper ;);)

Ordering all parts this aft when I've finished working, fed up of the bloody thing it's one thing after another at the moment :(
