Hi all, I have noticed a clunking from the rear prop. Upon inspection there is about 5mm play in all ways to the uj connected to the axle.

Question one - can the uj be replaced or will I need a new prop?

Question two- Is it safe to remove and drive with two wheel drive for a short time??

Thanks in advance

1 yes the UJ is replaceable and its a fairly easy job if you have a vice

2 i wouldn't ........

If you have no option (and running a prop which may come apart at any time is a good example of when you have no option!) there is nothing wrong with running in 2WD for the short term, just make sure you are careful and don't put too much strain on the driven axle while it is in that state. Needless to say you will need to lock the centre diff and should get your new UJ's fitted ASAP.

ujs can be replaced ,you dont have to do both and you can drive in diff lock with rear prop off wont hurt but will be a little more clunky setting off,you can replace jiont your self if you have a vice ,iwill tell you how if you need

the last one i did was a half shaft uj and it took me about 20mins without the use of a vice, with a vice its a lot easier

btw landrover UJs have the cups held in place by a circlip

if you look at both brg yoke you will notice one isnt completely paralell fit spider in this one first ,fit spider in push through holr as much asposs fit brg cap and holding it fully engaged with spider push in with socket ,push through as far asoss with out cap coming completelt out this allows the spider to poke out of other side of yoke to fit the other brg cap without pulling out of first brg cap then push baack fit circlips sometimes you will need to spread yoke after fitting with suitable hammer and punch after fitting if jpint is too tight

the ujs can be done without a vice a couple of sockets and a mallet will do

i drove on the plains most of the day when me rear diff went, removed the halfshafts and was still clunking so removed rear prop and carried on playing

Thank you gents,

all sorted, £20 for new UJ and new stainless nuts and bolts from AJD, no vice but managed to sort it with G clamp, two 19mm sockets, a big hammer and a half hour of labour.
