I am tempted to buy an ex-MOD Defender of some sort. Basically I am single, working (so have money), no kids, mortgage or other responsibilities. I have wanted an "Army Land Rover" since I was about 10. I don't have my own car at the moment, I am sharing my mum's Nissan hatchback as my Series 3 is in pieces. I do like the look of the Tithonus 110s, although realistically they are not ideal for London driving (apart from the fact that other cars would get out of your way).

However, with living where I do in London, I think a Defender would fall foul of the low emission zone regulations.

I have been told that you can register a Hard-top 90 or 110 as an "estate car" and the low emission zone would not apply. However, a soft-top is classed as a pickup and would be subject to the regulations.

Has anyone else had this problem, does anyone know anything about the regulations?

The LEZ issue seems to be a nightmare. I won't comment on that one!

From a practical point of view, a 110, without windows, power steering and with the turning circle of an oil tanker is not the easiest thing to drive around town. Also, clutch is heavy.

Ex-mod are heavy duty chassis as well, you can feel that extra weight when stopping and when idiots cut you up (which happens frequently).

Having said that, I drive mine in urban conditions all the time and it just puts a smile on my face!

If you are going ex-mod and money is no object, look for a more modern wolf with 300 TDI, power steering etc.

or if you get one of the ex-mod petrol v9's i believe the LEZ doesnt apply!!

Yup, only applies to diesel. V8 for London is a good idea, real nice sounding engine and pleanty of oomph at the lights.

I have looked at the Wolf Vehicles and they look nice. However I don't have a totally unlimited budget.

It's the same with the V8, I think it would just use too much fuel. As I am 22, insurance would probably be too high as well.

A 2.5 NA 90 is probably a better bet (if I can get it registered as an estate car). I would think this would be very similar to driving my Series 3 88in Diesel. When it was still on the road, it was difficult at times, but doable. Since I don't plan on staying in London long-term, then hopefully it won't be a problem forever.

So did you go for one? Any luck on the LEZ front?!
I've been checking this out too and finding some conflicting results - even when checking with the TfL reg checker.
