Well, l fitted one to my 110 and the missus's 90
Both were low mileage in VGC with all the suspension in good order.

For road use, it made both Land Rovers better, more so the 110.

l imagine it also alters steering feel or something but we never noticed. l guess it's something you either like, or you don't.

l don't see many with RTC steering dampers fitted.

An RTC steering damper should make no odds to wondering in the motorway. That would suggest something very worn or lack of attentive driving ;)

Ultimately one has to ask, why did Land Rover never fit RTC steering dampers to any of their live axle vehicles if they make such a difference for road use?

This 100%. If all steering and suspension components are in good condition and correctly set up there is no "wandering..." on motorways. Land Rovers drive straight as a die with only natural input to the steering.
