I have a 1985 CSW with the Salisbury Rear Axle. Recently, I noticed oil leaking from the cap on the drive hub. After taking apart the rear hub, it became apparent to me that nothing is preventing the diff oil from coming into the hub and into the wheel bearings. Am I missing something? Some models have two seals but others, to include mine, only have the inner oil seal. What keeps the diff oil from just coming out the end of the drive hub as is the case in mine?

Thanks for clarifying. Before this, I had assumed there was an oil seal that kept the oil from getting into the hub but it makes sense that you would want oil to keep the bearings cool and lubricated.

So if I am seeing oil outside the hub, it sounds like it is time to replace the hub caps or at least use some sealant.
 
The caps are enough to keepthe oil in, so there's no need to use any sealant, as that will potentially, only make things difficult when you need to get it apart again.
 
its well worht getting genuine caps though, the britpart ones i tried just leaked worse, they are to stiff.

Personally i think the diff oil sloshing into the wheel bearings is a good thing, probably makes them last longer than the later wheel bearing setup
 
There are some nasty hard plastic caps available, don't get them.
Caps should be firm but pliable.
Warm them up in a jug of hot water and they will just push on but grip and seal very well once cooled.
 
I got some caps, supposedly correct number etc and they didn't fit - any idea of part number for early [1983] 110 with Salisbury? Thanks in advance,
