Hi, been looking at a few discovery's and what an eye opener...anyway I found one that seems fairly solid except for rust on the rear whell arches which you can see when you open the rear doors. Now I dont weld so wondered what sort of money I'd need to spend to get them sorted out..and also is it rusy there does it normally mean that it gone somewhere else for the water to get there..any help appreciated...cheers
 
Most people on this forum either do it themselves or get a mate in .. costs a beer or two, mostly .. ;)
 
inner wings are prone to dissapear on discos aswell mate

Add to that list inner and outer sills, the area of the roof just above the winscreen, the boot door around the handle and most of the floorpan.

The rear arches are not that easy repair. The middle of the rear 3/4 panel is made up like a honeycomb section. This can either be repaired by bodging it, (just plating over it), or doing what I considered to be properly and making out lot, (and I do mean LOTS), of tiny little sections, each of the correct size and shape to fit each of the honeycomb 'holes'.

Although maybe after all the rust that I found on mine I was being super paranoid about how it got repaired?
 
look for a recently reimported OR well mainted jap imported Disco

Inner front wings, Boot floor, Rear inner wheel arches all rot

If you cant get a m8 to weld then it can cost you a good couple of hundred quid minimum. Bear in mind though that it wont actually fail an MOT unless the rust is within a (cant remember extact distance) of the searbelt anchor point. Your arches can be falling off and still pass an MOT

Can always use it a a barganing point. Mine had been done already when I bought it but I still got money off the guy and rest of the car was pretty decent. Depends how much the money is burning a hole in your pocket and how many welders you know
 
Hey guys and gals, does anybody know exactly the distance from seat belt anchor points can be rusted before it will fail MOT? I iz askin cos my disco has a 2 cm hole in rear wheel arch at the top at the point where it meets the vertical bit of the rear body.
 
walk away, if the visible piece of the arch is corroded its a pretty safe bet that the lower C pillar has rusted through. put hand up inside the rear arch and have a good prod round, chances are the will be holes or patchwork. i make my living welding discos together (properly) and the whole area round there isn't a cheap repair. arch panels are approx £40 each, plus fitting,thats without the rot going further (which it will)
 
lol, what do you think? solihull products keep you busy thats for sure. have you seen the lack of rust proofing on td5s? jeez, they are going to be worse then any i'm sure. think someone at lode lane has a share in a mig wire company lol

I was appauled at how bad mine was. What started out as a small job of boot floor and a tiny hole in the inner front wing, ended up being inner and outer sills, (both sides), front wings, (both sides), rear arches, (both sides), sections of the roof, boot floor, and most of the floorpan.

I don't think that the problem is helped by most 1st and 2nd owners only washing the shiney 'upper' side of the vehicle. For me, the top can be as dirty as it likes. It's underneath that I want to keep clean.


But yes, I agree. The general design, materials used and rust proofing are all very, very poor.
 
lifted the body off a td5 we were breaking and the chassis was "dry", flakey rust all over the back end, only paint left was where ACE pipes had leaked and engine bay. looks like we'll still be welding them up for a few years yet guys n gals!!
