Hi All,

I'm more of a lurker than a poster. However after reading all the posts I can find on my rear suspension issue. I've not found an answer so I thought I would ask some advice.

My drivers side rear air bag is sitting higher than the other side. It appears to be approx 3/4 of its available travel but will not deflate if you move the vehicle forward. However if you leave it for a couple of days it will occasionally go down but will pump straight back up.

However it has also corrected its self and self levelled on occasion, before re-inflating on one of the next couple of trips.

When I put a trailer on it, it worked perfectly with the other side.

I have replaced the 2 rear height sensors, valve block and compressor. I have also reset the height using a hawkeye. Which worked for a trip then it went back to how it was before.

I have parked on kerbs to allow it to alter the height, but it keeps the drivers side up higher.

I believe that there is two options left, 1 replace the slabs ecu and the other replace the airbags.

However if I replace the airbag, I can't see how that would help unless there is an obstruction in the in/output valve? or pipe.

Does anyone have any experience of this or any advice as to which way to go?

Cheers

Hi . Are the airbags The same age / make or has someone only changed one in the past ? And have you tried factorying in the height difference with hawkeye and see how it sits then .

Did I not read on here that when you replace the height sensors you have to recalibrate them..

They both appear to be the same ageish.

That's not a bad shout. My only concern would be that if it is an error somewhere and it corrects its self, like it does on occasion that it might drop onto the bump stop.

However I will give it a go and let you know.

Hi Nige,

Thanks for the reply.

I did re calibrate them with the hawkeye after they were installed. They were ok for 2 trips, then the drivers side lifted back up.

Cheers

The air bags can throw up some weird behaviour as they're beginning to fail, like some days they'll stay up for ever and other days you've only got to get into it and the bags drop. They can also start dropping on one side more than the other.
This usually gets the new owner into trying to over-analyse the problem and that's when they get led up the garden path and decide to change to coils.
The air bags should be treated as "service items" and an owner should expect to have to replace them about every five years or so. I would also advise any owner with rear suspension problems to replace the air bags first as last and then if the fault persists that's the time to start suspecting other components.
Whenever mine shows signs of the rear suspension misbehaving I change the bags and so far I've been right every time.
The fault condition showing a bag over inflating can often be a problem with the ride height sensors. Disconnect the battery before disconnecting the sensors.
