personally i prefer the bow shape to the D shape as it protects the lock bolt from being hammered in use.
it wont do any harm to get the highest rated shackles that fit. If for no other reason than a higher safety margin.

myself and gibbophil towed 2 fire engines and an ambulance up a hill they couldnt get up the fire engine with water must have been the best part of 15tonnes we use our usual rated recovery gear (ropes and shackels) and it was no problem. I get stroppy when i see people using strops to to they clearly dont understand what a strop is intended for yes they are cheap yes it may even work but snatching or even the slightest of run ups using a strop is a No No! They are intended for winching when the 'no give' attributes are required ropes for towing strops for winching or even pull. Seen too many recovery points being ripped off and too many bad jolts to peoples backs at our local P & P as the idiots are using cheap strops. I even saw a you tube instructional vid that was pulled off you tube for recovery for a well known response group shown using strops for snatching a disco out of a hole. lots of people wrote on the video message board slagged them off so they pulled it makes me scream all for the sake of probably 20 quid extra for a rated rope Jai

ill be honest for the usual landy off roading and laning I always use my 8m rope I got from paddocks that is rated at 12 tonnes but that has a good safety factor cant remember off my head but its good 8 meters is nice cos when its doubled up its a nice useable 4meters i will post a link later when i get in.
For the fire engine i must confess that the rope we used was some rope we brought years ago on a roll rated at 20 odd tonnes plus its saftey factor. my dad is a dab hand at splicing up rope he did a whole roll 100 meters years ago for our off road group at the time so as soon as I get the contact details ill be ordering my roll so he can teach me how to splice a rope and make up various lengths Jai

I use strops all the time and have never had any trouble recovering with them I use 2t x 4mtr rated lifting strops. having a built in safety factor of about 6 or 7 to 1 they are good for upto 14tonnes so more than strong enough. However as jai said they aren't designed for snatch recoveries. If I think I'm going to have to snatch someone out. Then I get the tirfor out and winch them out.
Unless you know exactly what you are doing and don't care if you damage your vehicle or the vehicle you're recovering. Do Not buy a kinetic recovery rope. Used incorrectly they have the potential to kill you or anyone in the recovered vehicle When they snap or tear the recovery point off.

would you bunjee jump with a strop what would happen?
The instant energy produced would rip off even the best recovery points rope gives and absorbs the energy and transfers the pull more gently thus making it more comfortable for all components and occupants of the towed and towing vehicle and in some circumstances actually aids the recovery to a degree.
More over the instant energy produced by say a strop when having a run up or a "snatch" although only for an instant is massive, you can quite easily produce tens of tons if not a hundred or so tons (very long run up probably not as much as you think tho) for mabe half a second.
Example no 2:
When your car wont start and needs a push thats exactly what we do isnt it? We transfer our energy slowly over a long period to get it moving. We dont run at it at high speed colliding with the car for a second hoping that will move it, it doesnt work, it simply needs more energy for the same result which creates even more energy on towing components making it more dangerous and unsafe.
if you saw someone using a wire rope for a recovery as above you would all scream bad bad man but the strop with no give is exactly the same. Slightly less dangerous but has the same no give properties as most strops Jai

This Below is similar to what brought from Paddocks a while ago must be about 6 years now. Its the 24mm 12 tons and 8 meters but the ends were spliced neater into the rope that these ones. I carry this for my everyday/greenlane/Pay and Play days. It seems Paddocks don't do them anymore but they do pro comp strops probably better that lifting strops they may have some give but I still wouldnt use them. I'm stuck in me ways!

The pro comp ones seem much better than the lifting strops TBH but I'm not convinced you will never change me. Jai
SOmebody told me there semi kenetic.Dunno if thats true but they do seem to have a bit of give.Im happy with mine and have used it frequently!
