Disco 1. Would a standard tow bar fitted with a ball/pin be adequate as a rear-end recovery point, or should i be looking at Jate Rings? They appear to bolt to the chassis in the same place as the tow bar, so some modifications will be required to have both.

Thanks.

Rear tow bar is fine for rear recovery. You might want to get a 'D' shaped shackle as it fits over the tow ball without coming off.

disco 1/RR rear tow bars if standard fitment are known as ploughs as they tend to scoop up the mud when they dig in. They are good enough for recovery purposes as spyderman says. Jate rings for the front work well some people like them on the rear instead of the standard ball because it hangs so low and digs in but tring jate rings no the rear are no good if you need to tow a caravan or trailer occasionally plus just green laning you should have no problems with a standard setup Jai

The standard plough is fine but getting the mud out can be a bit of a pain. If you're laning or at a Pay & Play, raise the tow ball and electrical socket as high up as possible.

The only other "advantage" of a tow hitch as your rear recovery point is that with a shackle you can put a high lift under it and slew the car over if you need to. Have done this to great effect when I had a bit of a ditch incident.

i've the same issue but with my defender 90. the D shaped shackle, notice theirs various sizes, small, large. any ideas which one'l fit over the tow ball before I go out and spend me money!

being a pedantic bugger - yu dont want the shackle to go over the ball - last thing you want - yu want it to go around the stem of the tow ball.

yup - my post was fur them that dont - it needs to be big enough to go around the stem, but small enough to NOT come off over the ball. a simple measurement of ya balls shud do it. :D

i just measured my shackles - and they are 2" across the "hole" and 1.25" across the opening, with a 5/8" bolt - if that helps.

sort of - more Omega shaped! - will take a pic later.

this shape.......
