That feeling as you peel the carpet back and you are confronted with stomach churning amounts of rust...... is totally normal for a Discovery owner. If you are like me though and hate rust and the fact it spreads taking over once solid bits of steel, then owning a land rover can be taxing. Still, the parts are cheap from Frogatts/yrm if i recall. Find a friendly farmer who likes welding. But more than likely the rest of the body is similarly dissolving, so take a peak behind the carpets, wings and under the sills. Then weep.....
 
Lucky for me I found the surface rust on my landy boot floor when I was inspecting fuel lines. Mine was caused by a hole in the rusty fuel pump cover wich had let water through when I went offroad.

I love a bit of surface rust, you can get rid of it easy enough lol

It's where it has eaten into seam and spot welded panel joints that it hurts and you ends up with welding burns where you wish you didn't :eek:

Been there & done that with my uncles disco 1. I reckon a colinder has less holes in the body work lol
 
Hey all,

Just seeing all these replys now, didn't notice them on my alerts!! I got this discovery as a project so excited to get going on it (ignorance is bliss) I think I will take your advice and cut out the floor and replace, I have actually just started a new thread about the body mount brackets that are rotten, they are my main worry at the moment but I will probably do the jobs at the same time.

I have eased myself into disco ownership,
I have fixed the drivers seat as the rubber holding up the foam had collapsed, I have bleed the pwer steering now it sound normal, I have replaced the drivers door window regulator, I have run fuel hose directly from tank to lift pump bypassing the sedimenter as i think it may have been letting air in and I am just about to fix a solder on a circuit in the glove box to fix the rear elecric windows!! All small enough jobs but the all needed done!!

I'd be curious as to what the bottom of the floor looks like lol.

I hazard if you attack that with a grinder most of the metal will disappear ;)

Is there a reason why I couldn't use a flat piece of 1 or 1.2 mm sheet steel for the floor rather than buying a replacement floor section? Its just I might be able to get the sheet steel free!!

I believe some people do go this route themselves, but I think the ridges in there are to add strength
