Lock will not open, the auto lock is working all other doors are OK, the tailgate will not budge. I have noticed that the key barrel is moving when the key is inserted in fact the barrel is very wobbly. My problem is that I have a dog box in the boot so to remove innere door card is nigh on impossible, don't wish to destroy box, any ideas how to open the lock. HELP needed.

There are just two ways to unlock the door manually, with the key and lifting up the internal door pin, both have a direct connection to the lock via the operating rod.

As I’ve never had any dealings with “dog boxes” but can’t it be moved forward after folding Down the mid row seats and pushing the front seats forward. May or may not help with access :(
 
When mine recently did this it was the exterior handle which was seizing, it had stuck in the open position so when I had shut it again I couldn't open the tail gate because the handle was already in the open position so wasn't operating the mechanism. I pried the handle back down with a large screw driver then when I pulled the handle again it opened the tail gate. I then just sprayed the handle with penetrating oil to free it off and get it working again.
 
There is a rather weird fix to this.
Take the Land Rover logo off the handle, spray WD all around inside the left of the handle. then try to open it as normal.

Why is it all around ? There’s only two pivot points at each end of the unlocking handle hinge, nothing more and those points are a loose fitting.

Unfortunately not an unknown issue with the D2, with LR in there wisdom not fitting an external lock to the tailgate, one of their 70 + improvements over the D1 :D

At the end of the day, if the person with the problem manages to solve it with this fix, do you really think he'll give a sh1t how much WD he uses? I am not saying a canful!

No, it happened to me, I came on a forum, it might even have been this one, it was quite a while ago now and I was given this advice.
So, I tried it and it worked. I was then able to get the door open, lube what needed lubing put the badge back on and it has never been a problem since.

Instead of giving me a mouthful, why don't you try giving the OP the more precise advice you feel my post lacks?;)

There is of course the old car thief method as the 300tdi is old enough that it will work.
Get hold of some strapping tape, the nylon stuff that goes around big cardboard boxes when they are delivered.

Fold it into a loop, push the loop through the gap between the door, near the lift up tab and the door jamb. (Lots of peeps will say you have to pry the door open a bit but I bet you won't need to)
Manoeuvre the loop until it goes over the pull up tab.
Pull it hard to the left and keeping tension on it, move it up. It should unlock the door.
Then you should be able to open it as normal unless the door opening machanism is jiggered in which case, see my previous post.
If you cannot get hold of packing tape, any stiffish plastic will do, as long as you can fold it into a loop, last time I did this I used the plastic bag a gasket came in, it worked a treat.
 
If the barrel is very wobbly in the lock, it may be that it is not connecting sufficiently with the rest of the lock to actually unlock the door.
 
Big hammer, put the rear window through... Call the insurance company and get it replaced. Will cost you the excess.
 
Thanks for the sense as for the nonsense I'll say no more. Visited Foundry Four today and they recommended a new latch at the princely sum of £30. Next step remove the door card - dog box dismantled and dog set free.

Are we honestly expected to believe the dog was in the dog box all this time?
 
I'd put the old car thief method up as a video except the police would probably object. Going around with a piece of strapping tape in your pocket was an offence and still may be. "Going equipped" they called it.
When I was a rep in a Cortina or a Capri I locked my keys in the car so often I kept a bit of this tape behind the rear number plate so I could get back in, in seconds.
Had to use this last year when the batt went flat in the V8 Disco 1 and I discovered the key didn't work in the lock, only the ignition! Plastic back worked like a dream!
