I have been told that to change the rear discs that the half shafts have to be pulled out ?
Is this right ?

yes, because you need to remove the hub - the disc bolts are at the rear of it.
pretty easy though - an hour a side tops.

unless it's a Disco 2 of course....

Yeah,its no biggy,just jack the side you are doing nice and high to avoid much oil loss.The shafts (obviously) should be laid some clean and grit free.The take a bit of a jiggle to go past the inner bearing-thing but not much,be patient and dont force it.

once you got the hub off, bolt the hub back onto the wheel and lay it down on the floor... it will make removing the disc bolts alot easier...

Frenchy - Treworgy is right...Disco II you DON'T need to remove any half shafts...it's a straightforward job on a D2...

Yep it's a Disco 2, does that mean i can get at the bolts without pulling half shafts ?

Take your wheel off their will be a philips srew in the disc take that out possibly need an impact driver. give the disc a tap and it should be free. if memory serves me right you have to remove the caliper cradel. Dan

Yes, you'll need a #4 pozi to shift the disk-retaining screw...

It's a pretty easy job. Wheel off. Remove the 2 smaller bolts on the caliper (they hold the sliding pins), hinge the caliper out of the way, remove (16 sided bolt heads, 2 bolts - very tight, you'll need to bash them) the caliper carrier, remove the single screw holding the disk (with pozi 4), hit with hammer and off the disc pops. Even I did it!
