hiya

was wondering if someone can help me please.

Yesterday i went to pick up some rear seats for the FL.

It was 120 mile journey there, collected the seats and after an hour got back in the FL went to select drive and nothing happened, i put it into neutral and went into drive.

On stopping up a steep hill, all of a sudden felt a huge shudder then the gear loudly clocking into gear.

It didnt like kicking down anymore, after about 10 mile it settled down for the rest of the 120 mile journey home.

Am really worried that it might be the gearbox, was wondering if anyone may be able to steer me in the right direction please as if this is a common fault.

Sorry this is so long winded but i wished to put as much details as possible

would be looking to check/change atf as a matter of routine. not that costly and sometimes cures all manner of odd occurences.

no need to apolise things are alot better my friend, enjoying a few weeks away with my daughter in her caravan and have my beloved candy with me.

i am trying to search for a garage near me st neots near bedford, found a few land rover dealers but want nearly 300 to change the atf.

seeing if i could find a local garage, was expecting to pay about 1oo or so.

have now put seats in the back and now having to search the web to find fixings for the door card etc.

hiya,

after reading about changing the gearbox oil i decided to take it to a land rover garage, they found the wrong type of oil and incorrect level in the box.

i was up here in bedford and used rogers of bedford who i personally found very good.

only charged me 112.00 inc vat to completely replace the oil and giving the FL a once over.

the FL drives like a charm, extremely smooth and doesnt judder any more.

they did suggest that an ECU can give problems and wondered what everyone thought about that.

more often than not, it's the ATF which causes problems. At £112, it's not a cheap option, but certainly cheaper than having the gearbox out to change solenoids, or a new ecu.

When I had mine changed, I didn't realise how rough mine was until after it was changed.

Hi Guys

I had a recent problem with my TD 4 Auto. '03 When I put it into reverse I had a similar jolt, I thought I had reversed into something. From this point on, my car would not reverse. The lights go on but no action. the car drives forward normally and I usually have to drive it into position and push it to park... it's such a pain. The AA told me it could be gearbox oil or other. The other is not worth thinking about, a gearbox overhaul which would kill it for me as I recently paid €360 for a fule pump change. I know I was ripped off but could not prove it. If I cannot fix cheaply I am going to have to say goodbye to my baby as I cann't afford to fix.

Any advice much appreciated.

wasn't there something regarding gear selection problems relating to faulty soleniod or corroded loom connector too back along

Check the auto wiring harness barrel connectors (x2) are mated correctly. Also if the wiring loom has been cut or snagged on anything. It's easy and free so you might as well. Pic below shows connectors behind LHS headlight, near the bottom of the battery.

If you've recently had work done at a garage, then I'd suspect they may have removed the wrong nut thinking it's the level filler plug, as mentioned above. Failing that it could be a solinoid or something electrical insdie the auto thats failed.
