Hi guys,

The steering wheel telescopic reach function on my L322 has stopped working. The spindle that moves the steering wheel in and out has threaded. I've had it to pieces and this is what the problem is, without a doubt. I've spoke LR, they want £1500 in parts alone to put a new column in.

At the moment the wheel steering wheel moves in and out freely, so is dangerous really.

Does anyone know a garage that will repair instead. I'm based in west London.

Thanks

Has yours had the 2006 recall done?

According to the link above it's for all L322's. I'd check that, If not get it done.

Which bit on this picture is the bit you think is broken?

And we're trying to help you. LandRover have given you a quote for getting it fixed which you appear unhappy with. Let us to help you if you want it done cheaper, Else, Go pay LR to do it.

So have you had it apart and you are sure it is the spindle that has stripped??

As per the link, the common failure is the Nylon clip that holds the Drive mech in place.

Yer beat me to it - had to answer a call from the Boss and didn't press POST in time!!! :D

Yeh, it's definitely stripped. I've heard the whole column needs to be replaced for one small part that could most likely be machined and tapped to fit.
That's another thing actually, I was just going to put several bolts on and lock them together then disconnect the motor so that it's locked in place.
Couldn't find out what size thread it was. Have tried imperial, metric and all sorts of thread sizes, nothing fits. It seems to be a special size and thread spindle.

Toys well and truly thrown out the pram now, i'm gonna push her in the Thames

The metal block that's highlighted has stripped.

I've spoken to LR today about the 2006 recall for the steering column.

Apparently the recall is only for the tilt function:confused: (so says the woman on the phone) I'm going to the dealership tomorrow to speak to an engineer to find out for certain as in the link (Steering Column tilt and reach problems and solutions (Range Rover III)) it seems to imply the actual column was recalled.

Thanks Guys

Hi all! Just got back from LR, turns out I need a new steering column because the part that the telescopic spindle turns through is stripped. It's not a recall job and they want £1300 for the job all in. Does anyone know any specialists that might do this repair for less? I'm in west London. Thanks

Expensive !
I'm sure you can just buy the part that's broken ??

Very expensive. LR say it's a new steering column and i'd also heard rumours that this was the case with this broken part. Ridiculous really. Would cost nothing to make and i'm gonna end up forking out yet again for poorly engineered parts on this car!

Just fix it so the steering rack is locked in place so it doesn't wobble about

Then just live without the adjustable bit

Much cheaper !

I have the "reach motor dangling under the dash" issue, and would like to cable-tie it back in place, but I haven't been able to make out where (or how) it's supposed to fit. I have only taken the lower steering wheel cowl off so far, hoping I could do it from there, but access seems pretty impossible (and actually getting the cowl back in seems pretty impossible, too!). Has anyone got any clear pictures of the set-up in position?

Page one of this thread has a pic of the motor arrangement
Not sure If its of any use
I saw that, but I can't see anything recognisable! Maybe it's the orientation. I have a nasty feeling the dash is going to have to come off tomorrow. How much of it has to go to get decent access? I'm new to the L322, having been a P38 owner for 16 years...

forget garages find a good "old fashioned"engineering shop,£1300 for a steering column "kin-ell".having read the "occasional"disagreements twixt datatek and hippo i now realise why l322 owners walk with a permament stoop having been "bent" over the counter so many times
