I guess so that looks busted up around your balls:eek:
That shaft has definitely got a case of “bad hair day”:D
Weird how cv inner only worn on half of surface? Misalignment and sloppy LR tolerances?

New prop first then evaluate cv? Or just rip in cos obviously it has thrown grease everywhere. Funny to have 2 failures together?
But as we all know anything is possibly with LR ownership.

Good work getting that out on your drive:)

Proper mess!

155000miles on that joint if its original part. Diff was shimmed up so maybe just that extra bit of load on it and with it being taken off and put back on...i was in there as well wasn't I, packed it back out.....I'm hoping driveshaft cv was on way out before I started on diff cuz I've had the same vibration on left hand down under load before and after diff bearing was done. I'll pull driveshaft tomorrow morning :)

Just gonna nail 2 new driveshafts and a new prop in mate, I know front of drivelines ok then unless something's really not right

R.e propshaft lengths Jon, how much difference was there in your replacement one? Only there's quite a bit of adjustment in the front diff mounts, I slackened the bolts and slid diff right forward just now and prop just dropped out. Sure if a replacement prop was 5mm longer I'd get it in and take up extra length with diff mounts...

I have lengths somewhere will have a look, mine was a lot more than 5mm as you can see in my pics.
I never touched the diff. Didn’t realise so much movement possible.

Is there some sort of alignment procedure for putting in diff? (Just throwing that out there I don’t know).

There's was enough slotted holes and adjustment when i put it back in to make me worry there is an alignment procedure!
I couldn't find anything though, so just put prop, axle extension and driveshafts back in and let diff sit where it wanted then tightened the mount bolts up....the foremost diff mount with the sleeved bush can only accept the bolt one way as bracket holes are round, i had this in centralised as well before i tightened sliding mounts

Check this out, I haven’t read all (just skimmed) I also think you have CVs both ends anyway, but shows alignment issues. Don’t know if relevant.

Jesus, what a Fùck up on Land Rover's part.

On D3/rrs I'd hope if the front mounting bolt and axle extension tube are bolted in, prop is in and diff pushed back to compress prop joints, it's in as it should be?

Is a bit worrying I've had 2 components fail since having diff out

Weird place for a boot to split! I reckon I've caught that myself o_O

I don't think there's anything wrong with this

Tempted to just throw a new prop on and repack this joint, see if I can get a boot for it

I don’t know if compressing the prop joints is right.

You have 2 flanges with a lip so effectively when you put prop in the cvs they open up slightly when bolted up.

Looks ok. I am sure new boots are available. While your there though are the splines to cv on those shafts ok.
And you said you had some “knocking” what the outer cv condition?

Probably wrong wording on my part I bolted prop on both ends then tightened diff mounts as it sat where it wanted to if that makes sense.

Just come in to do kids breakfast, splines look ok both ends, need to check outer cv.

Symptoms were a rotational 'whubwhubwhub' which changed with road speeds. This went after diff bearing was done.

And a grinding noise you can feel through the pedals and steering. Only happens on slight left hand lock at speed, under load. I.e coming off an island when you're turning left slightly or towing uphill. This was there before diff bearing was done and still there afterwards

Ok.
As said earlier strange to have 2 failures at the same time.
You have found the reason for lack of drive (propshaft) your grease is just the split boot, but as you are in it best check condition of outer while you can.
Hope you can get parts quick.
One of your test lines is still confusing me, may be me head was frazzled

Everything coming from advanced factors so wont be open till tomorrow.

I ordered 2 bastard driveshafts Friday evening, luckily it's not been processed yet. Think I'm gonna ring em in the morning, cancel the r/h driveshaft and have the prop instead. So new l/h driveshaft and prop for ease. I know it's prob ok but I just want it back together now.

Which bits frazzled you? The grinding noise I've still got?

Turning offside wheel, nearside doesn't move. Prop spins freely

Which bits frazzled you?

The last one of your tests.

All the others made sense and would suggest all was well. Maybe somethings tight on the near side cvs?

Don’t forget to measure you shaft to check when you pick up new 1, the pages the mr stuart pasted shows your length so you can check against what you have. To confirm you stand a chance of getting the right 1.

Back on the road today, what a ballache week that was. 5am starts at work, weather, school run and being absolutely fooked by the time I got home blah blah sob sob poor old me :p

Inner CV boot was a pain in the arse, the joint took some persuading to drift off then it took ages to get the driveshaft back in, but it did have a new clip. Had to tap it home with a socket over the end. It was a bit of a nightmare tbh. New front prop was straightforward enough.

Just done 25mile shakedown, I've STILL got that rumbly vibration on left hand bends under load  there's also a resonance from the drivetrain on very light throttle, like when you back off the power but not quite on overrun. I think it's always been there but was masked by the goosed diff bearing. There's a 5 page thread on d3 forum where about 20 people have exactly the same but no one ever sorted it. Maybe it's something they just do o_O

Just gonna drive it now and see if it lasts longer than 3 days this time!

Oh, and i greased the bump stops!
