Just been looking and manual reading. It appears to me like this. (Don’t mean it’s right would need somebody in long trousers to confirm:D)

Your 2006 was basically the same as the L322 underneath. They seem to be a limited slip diff which can be fully locked or variable lock through electronic control. This all reacts differently in diff modes.
So I guess this is where we get to why you had no drive, I guessing for this all to lock up the car needs to see, 1 spinning wheel or mismatch wheels speeds between axles.
If you have a broken shaft you get no drive, no wheel speeds, so the brain does nothing.

Earlier models were fitted with a torsion type ATB which as above would give same results, in this situation too.

That’s my take anyway,

Sure somebody will put my thinking’s right if they aren’t

Don’t actually help fix your problem right now though:oops:

Thanks mate!

Might not fix it, but that info and what I've seen looking at the cv joint helps put my mind at rest it's not something massively expensive, appreciate that dude :)

Ffs, mateys cracked an alloy on his 5 series and he aint got the van this weekend. Reckon my moms chaps a4 quattro will push the D3 up the drive? Bit of a slope mind (the drive..), I fear for his clutch :D

Just picked this up on you other post.

Do you mean it all turns going into the diff but not the wheels? Or do you mean diff flange not turning.

J

Diff end of the actual prop isn't turning, whereas transfer end is. So prop fùcked surely?

Sounds like spines goosed on propshaft/cv goosed then and not your drive shaft (left to right)

Not sure what’s the easier fix:)
Grease everywhere still need investigation.
But please remember my thread about getting wrong prop and gearbox frame.

J

Yes that end of the prop is fubared:(
It’s turning around the gaitor on the shaft? So splines on shaft or cv broke, got to come off to find out which.
You had both wheels off the ground? Least resistance will turn opposing wheel in opposite direction. Doesnt mean you don’t have a failed/failing cv. Need to chock 1 wheel and turn other still won’t fully show if prop turns in the transfer box end, (when in gear) only 1 wheel off the ground should turn prop.
To check for the failed suspect you will need to lock the prop (chain wrench) and lift suspect wheel to see if you can turn.

Is that the one you repacked? You put all the balls back in didn’t you :) I know you did.

Was that the misses asking if you needed coffee by the bucket, good job you brought the new kettle:)

You really testing my grey matter tonight, and if anybody wants to correct my thinking then please do

Both front wheels off ground and in 1st gear in vid. Prop and suspect driveshaft coming out over bank holiday so will report back. All balls present and correct sir!

Curry and a few beers now, keep calm Mr Mainwaring, it's just nuts and bolts!

Enjoy and relax. Why not go to cpl Jones and get a nice steak:)

Tomorrow’s another day

J

I've smashed the curry and could still eat a steak! Just nipped back out, nearside driveshaft is suspect one r.e grease and noise when broke down.

In neutral now

Holding offside wheel and turning nearside, propshaft spins.

Holding nearside and turning offside, propshaft spins.

Turning nearside wheel, offside moves opposite direction. Prop spins notchy.

Turning offside wheel, nearside doesn't move. Prop spins freely.

Propshaft feels rough whenever it spins and audible as in video.

So I think prop and nearside inner cv goosed. 2 new driveshafts on order, I'll strip nearside driveshaft and front propshaft probably monday and report back :)

I have to say that frazzled me head.trying to work that out:oops:

Maybe the cv has failed in drive direction, which way where you turning wheels?
But whatever way you look at it you have a prop that don’t work and cv very suspect.

relax and enjoy the rest of your night:)

Lmao frazzled mine ascertaining and typing it  thats what ive got though, turning wheels as if driving forward.

Big Rich says get a 530d touring. Nah! What would I do on weekends then??:D

Turn the wheels backwards to simulate drivetrain driving forward? I think.

Anyway tell Big Rich he don’t know what real living is ;) I am far enough away to get away with that:)
