Picked diff up on way back from work, bearing sorted and all shimmed up properly. He said I was lucky and caught it just in time as it wasn't far from breaking up  didnt have the heart to tell him id drove 100s of miles on it

Shiny bits :D

Only ordered yesterday from Advanced factors. Didn't pay any extra for super duper delivery either!
Sods law after being dry all day while I'm at work. Rain stops play :(

You wont melt! your not a true spanner-er until your out there in all weathers in a high vis coat :D:D

I've done enough working in the wet, tanking basements :p it's only spitting now tho so gave chassis and bits a quick wire brush and spray. It won't last but feck it :D

Bit late to start putting stuff back now, I'll clean the driveshaft splines and all the bolts up and get em copper greased ;)

Hmm

Cleaning the driveshafts up, the inner CV of the drivers side shaft...It makes a bit of a knocking noise if I wiggle it. Sounds dry. None of the others make a noise. This means it is fooked I suppose?

Or can I take boot off and pack it with grease?

I've took the boot off since then, it had come adrift. Probably pulled on it removing it  it's slotted back in but is it serviceable now I've had it apart? It'll need grease at least I suppose. I know you can change outer but don't think inner can be messed with :(

Edit found this

I've got lithium grease and jubilee clip for the boot. Panic over?

Took diff to Intergear in willenhall. They've had a look at it, ive explained I can't afford a full rebuild. They're happy to change the shìt bearing for me and reseal the case up for £75.
That's not a bad price, as the bearing is about £30 on its own.
Theres a bit of roughness in the pinion bearing but nothing untoward he said.

It could just have some of the case hardening from the bad bearing in the cage. It'll flush out in time, so should be ok, for many thousands of miles yet. I've replaced quite a lot of D3 diff bearings over the last few years. I've not had any return faulty yet.

Cheers that's a confidence booster lol. He did say it'd be fine and it's in good shape :)

You do mean moly grease, don't you? As lithium grease isn't suitable for CV joints

Granville 0168A CV grease, says on tin lithium based with added molybdenum disulphide is this correct? Apparently outer joint uses graphite and inner lithium

Good news and bad...

Diff is in! All bolts are there but loose for now

That was a struggle on me own lol, my missus did help with the jack before she had to go to work. Wouldn't have done it without her tbf

Upper arms, drop links are on loose. All brake lines and sensors back in their brackets

Copper slipped every nut, bolt, thread, shank, nick, nack and paddywhack.:p If this fooker needs to come out again I'll be ready ;)

Bad news.

I didn't have to take the prop off at the transfer box end when I dropped the diff. No way was it going back in without the prop off both ends. Only the joint on the prop decided to **** itself when I liberated it

I'm not messing around, straight to equicar4x4 after work tomorrow, used prop. Stick the jack under the transfer box, drop the crossmember and crack on

Oh and I forgot to pick a CV boot clip up today

They pull off like that it’s not a problem. That bit is with the boot, the plate on the back might come off too. They both have gaskets and are sandwiched together when you bolt it up.

Pic was from when I pulled mine off the new prop to put on the old that bit and the boot stayed on the prop.
And I used the old 1 as the boot was fine.

Cheers mate, I need a lot of guidance lol thank fook you lot are on here

Slowed almost to a stop. Missus covered a couple of night shifts at the hospital last couple of days so I've been sorting the kids out and nephews birthday party today

Everything's in and torqued up except for offside driveshaft and upper arm bolts etc.

Weather's shìte here as well.

@marjon The prop joint went back together ok, the end 'cup' had come off though so I cleaned it up and regreased it. See how it goes...cheers

She's back on her wheels, started her up and no suspension warnings or anything. Levelled out good as gold bless her :D

That was a right mission, 9 days, only an hour or 2 each day but it seemed like ages!

Just been for the scariest drive of my life :p the rotational whubwhubwhub is gone, the grinding on left hand down under load is still there but nowhere near as bad as before. Wonder if driveshaft or bearing in extension tube is worn? Or maybe a rear wheel bearing o_O I'll monitor it, hopefully it's not something fooked in the diff causing that bearing to fail straight away

Loved driving it again :D

Updated diff breather fitted

Life hack! If your fluid syringe hose won't go in yer 'ole, grab a spare fitting off a td5 fuel filter housing and a jubilee clip :D

Balancing act, did 680ml as if from dry and it just started to seep out the fill hole. Hope that's right!

Good to see you back up and running.
That’s always a problem when we do new stuff the first time, you always doubt your own work and hear some new noises:)

Drive it and a quick check next weekend ( your own doubt on anything not done properly, I do it:))

Then get on with life, till the next problem ( lets be real we know it’s gonna happen:D)
