Sounds like a nice idea but it won't stop them just lifting the vehicle or towing it. Might slow down an opportunistic thief but the pros won't be that easy to beat. What's to stop them cutting a portion out of the steering wheel with a portable angle grinder? And they do carry them. Or cutting the steering wheel off completely and using mole grips to steer? Or even just cutting the chain?

It honestly does not matter what you do... if they want your motor badly enough then they are going to get it. The only thing we can try to do is slow them down to the point that it becomes more trouble than it is worth for them to take the vehicle.

You've only just came to that conclusion after 23 pages?
Hardly...

If you have read through the pages then you will know that every so often the subject wanders and becomes not "how do we slow them down", but "How do we stop them?"... since people drop in and out of the conversation and many are not as diligent as they might be... it serves a purpose to issue the reminder every once in a while.

Besides... I can assure you... I have a vested interest in people being perfectly clear about what is and what is not achievable.

i can disable mine and did, but it didn't stop them taking out a back window to open the rear door and then smash the cowling around the ignition switch before they realised that they couldn't start it (sorry at this point if somebody has already said this, but i haven't read all the post...i will pay any forfeit, if required) what i want is an alarm that goes off as soon as a door is opened, in the hope the it scares them off.

i was thinking of something like a door switch, courtesy light type switch....but with remote activation/deactivation.

We could easily configure the tracking device to include that. So you would have sensors on the doors, a motion detecter inside the vehicle and activate th whole lot by a button on your keyring. A second button would activate an ignition isolator, as would a phone call or command from the web site

Does this sound like something you might like?

Hello everyone, just joined the forum today, specifically for some security advice :)

My old 90 was stolen, I got it back and quickly installed the X-Eng pedal lock, column lock and gear stick lock... It was parked across the road from my house, they cut through the steering wheel lock and rolled it away, out the village and then took it to a lock up near Sunderland. The police found it, took 3 months to get it back, they'd not had chance to do much damage, just annoying stuff like ripping the door seals off, took the CB radio, left the winch and everything else - took my curly wurlys from the cubby! &%$£$%@£

To cut a very long story short, i've recently lost my 90 to the ex, who kindly took it along with one of my dogs when he left, so instead of paying for a wedding i'm treating myself to a brand new 90. It wont be ready until October, but already having one stolen I want to be prepared to get this one kitted out the day it lands in my possession!

The X-Eng stuff was/is great, couldn't fault it. I was all set to get the pedal plate, but i've been made aware they don't fit the 2014 defender... Does anyone know if the 'ardcase will fit? If i can squeeze it on my driveway I will but it's really tight... so might have to be over the street, which is also narrow - quite liking the baby monitor idea! my dog barks her head off if anyone walks past the house after 11pm so she's definitely bark at any noise picked up...

Also keen on a secondary alarm, and have been reading about Skytag trackers... any good or waste of money?

It might not be possible for me to get it in my driveway, i've very aware of keeping wheels turned, parking as close as I can to the neighbours car, having visible deterrents etc - I just don't want to lose this one, it was heart breaking, and this one is instead of a husband so could do it sticking around ;)

Hope the new 90 will be more reliable than a husband?

I can't really give much advice re: security as like most owners have a few extra secrets that can't be broadcast on a forum. I've always had a genuine Disklok, but can be defeated fairly easily, although modification by welding extra metal on back helps (Half-moons). The new 90's factory alarm is easily defeated, so better alarm/immobiliser would certainly help. Doors and bonnets are very easy to remove, so a lot of owners hammer ball bearings into the door screws or fill the heads with a metal epoxy. The bonnet really needs special secure hinges to make it difficult to just lift off.

Thanks - i'm sure it will be hah!

I measured up last night and should be able to get it on my drive so will get a parking post put in as well as a second alarm, pedal lock, disk lock and tracker :)

Hold fire on the tracker for a week or so... I am just putting a video together to illustrate exactly what my system is capable of... with the LZ discount it should be a good option to consider.

All the best

great!! I wont be getting it delivered until end of oct/beginning on Nov so i'm no hurry, just wanted to be prepared and possibly overly anxious about it having had my last one nicked! :)

I have invested in a disclock, pedal lock, aftermarket alarm and fitted a couple of isolater switches. A ground anchor is going on the drive where I can attach a chain through the chassis or weld some recovery brackets to the rear axle to lock through!!
Failing that the dogs got a new kennel and she's very protective of her bed!
