I'm getting a rattling metallic sound whilst driving along. Sounds like lhs with the windows open but I could be imagining it. Checked underneath for anything loose and fixed an exhaust shield, but that wasn't it. Played around a bit and "seems" to go when the clutch is dipped, so thinking clutch/gears?
It's a D2, td5, 51 plate, 140,000 miles.
NB Did change gear oil about a year+ a go.

Any ideas?!

Not shaw if it's the same on a manual as the auto . But I've had a bracket work lose on my d2 on the transmission. Brake /handbrake . If you look up at it in the middle of the car there's a moon shape ish shape bracket in front of drum give it a wiggle . Mine sounded just like a lose exhaust just needed nipping up

Check the UJ's in your props _very_ closely.

could it be the dual mass flywheel?

If it's quiet when clutch dipped it could be the release bearing rattling about ?

turn the radio up? close the window? that's what I do with rattles lol mine has a rattle similar to what you are saying and I cant work out what it is, had it over a year now

Have a look at the turbo heat shield, the bottom brackets shear and can make a hell of a noise.

I did adjust the handbrake last September, I'll check that one cheers.

Front prop (complete) replaced Xmas before last. Rear prop checked, seems tight as. Cheers.

Mine has this rattle (see attachment).

Will get it fixed sometime...

if the noise goes away when you press the clutch pedal,then tis either the DMF or the release bearing.

Could well have been the release bearing then. When ours went it started off with 3rd being a pain to get then slowly got worse untill no gears could be selected.

The bearing is mounted on a plastic cage which connects to the release fork. When the bearing gets hot it melts the plastic meaning it can't fully release the clutch.

Double check the oil first though as an easy start point.
