If MPG isn't an issue, but reliability is then go for the V8 petrol version not TDV6. Diesel gearboxs are weak and if you look through this forum you'll see alot of them failing. V8 gearbox is different and seems to be more reliable. Plus you get the nice sound of a V8 rather than a rattly diesel that way too! :)

As a whole I think L322's are that unreliable if you service them properly and don't drive them like they are stolen!

Not that bothered about the MPG really, just if it can do more than why not get it mapped ? its still doing better MPG than my freelander TD4 that was tuned on the max settings.

never been one for petrol engines, dont like the way they work, sound etc.. i quite actually like the sound of the diesels, there quite loud and hence everyone you pass looks to see WTF the noise is ! lol :D

iv got the earlier TD6 engine not the newer tdv6, as from what i have heard the TDv6 are slightly under powered ?

Well i won't go into too much detail as it has been covered in length on other threads, but basically by re-mapping/chipping you are probably going to increase the torque. The current gearbox on those early diesels isn't rated to even to standard torque output (hence the problems people have with them failing), so to increase it more is just making gearbox failiure even more likely. Which is then £2k+ (I've heard of people paying double that) to get a refurb'd 'box, or a new one.

But you can also re-map for increased economy on a common rail engine which reduces torque a little so will protect the gearbox:)

i had a 04 td6 and it was fantastic
but watch out they bite hard when they go wrong
Gearbox went £3500 arounf 80k miles
Turbo went 3 months later £2500
Fuel pums and injectors went 3 month after that £2500
but if you have deep pockets go for it it trully is a stunning motor

I won't ever moan about my P38 again. Apart from its thirst for fuel its been economical to run in comparison!!

Very hard to get right in my humble view, too easy to sap performance - not race-track performance, just day to day usability. These are heavy cars. That said didn't even know there were chips / remaps out there already for L322s!

wtf it was was that ffing great big RR that hove to in the mirror and then blocked out the sun as it passed. if they missed that, the sound ain't gonna tell 'em much! :p interesting that you actually prefer the sound of a diesel to a petrol V8 though, another thing I've heard for the very first time.

It's a Bosch ECU I believe, look at Bimmer sites, I reckon you will find plenty of proven re-maps for different requirements just as there are for my Transit on which I can if I wish choose from 2 or 3 maps at he push of a button. Standard for the MOT, more horsepower or more economy.

Hey Mr Hippo...
I just bought a 54plate TD6 and was wondering who you use for servicing as I am also in Herts...
Drives superb for a motor with 127K on it,but the last service was undertaken by a back street yard with a real poor reputation and as I intend to go travelling I need a full major engine service and the auto box fluid & filter changing, possibly just to reassure myself.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

If you are going traveling in it, better to learn to DIY and then take a supply of filters etc to last the trip.:)

I can do the DIY bit if pushed, its just I do not have the time at the moment.
I need a full engine service, new oil breather/filter and auto transmission filter and oil renewal....
I have only just returned to a Range Rover since my last an 81 vogue was written off in 85...Ive had a Patrol,Trooper,Maverick and Prados in between and for my sins a FourTrak....
I would rather a qualified person look it over and if other bits are lacking I can get these sorted too before I set out.
I know most of the listed service centres but I was wondering if anyone on this forum knew of a good RR/LR tech who might be interested.

Any of those is more likely to get you where you want to go than a Range Rover, even the FourTrak of which I have happy memories:)
As for garages, might help if you put a location.

The 4T was a bloody nightmare.....simple oil change led to the engine BLOWING UP on restarting.....fired up first time...revved to the max of its own accord, ignition would not turn off shortly by the bang crash grinding & seizure..
I thought I had put my location ....BUT I have not...Thanks:)
Im in Cheshunt in Hertfordshire....
but back to my RR....I love the drive and the comfort so if it breaks down every now then I think that I can live with it here in the UK but going overseas I feel I should get her in a tip top condition before leaving...my knowledge of other languages is pretty much pants so getting anything done could well be lost in translation

Cheers
