Favourite place for leaks is past the rubber tailgate seal. Check it's not split or perished.

Hi, sounds same as was happening to my spare wheel area, boot seal looked perfect with no rips or perished areas but i changed it anyway and it stopped the water coming in. hope this helps.
Keep all the water you can get! You will need it when your engine gets to hot when pulling a trailer
