HELP!!!!!!!! just changed the rad on my 95 4.0 range rover got the air out and the car sits half way on temp gauge at idle i can drive it miles its fine but as soon as i put the heater on in the car fully up the car starts to overheat when i turn the heater off it goes back to half way any ideas thanks

the only way to check rad for your fault is to feel core of rad all over to make sure its hot all over colder parts arent cooling could be head gasket could be cracked block check entire system is full with coolant
 
worst case scenario youll have to replace stripped motor ,but check first could be poor rad lpg leaking in from vapouriser ,head gasket ,water pump etc
 
well not really a mechanic but know a little after i had rad checked thought id try the thermostat but i have no white smoke no oil in my water no white gunk on my oil filler cap not sure what it is heater in car still coming out hot when i take water tank cap off the water bubbles out
 
May be you've just got an airlock after changing the thermostat then -- I believe they're notoriously tricky to get all the air out.
I think if you search on here, you'll find a few techniques to get the air out.
 
Have you had a sniff test yet?... Takes a couple of mins , it will check the pressure in the system also. You need to start eliminating ASAP.
 
overheating + misfire = liners or if your lucky head gaskets sorry to be the bearer just personal experience
 
you MUST check the small return pipe on the top of the rad to the header tank is totally clear both ways. blockage is a common fault, this will cause rapid overheating if blocked.simply detach rad end and blow and vice versa obviously when cold to avoid scalding
 
Get a sniff test done to rule out head gasket or block. Then go and buy a new radiator. You can get them off ebay for less than £100. The cooling system on a Rangie is so fickle that as a rule of thumb I always install a new raditor for piece of mind. When I changed out the one on my '99 it weighed 1.7Kg more than the new one. All manner of crud came out of the old one.
As #jamesmartin says most places will only check them for leaks and not cooling efficiency.
 
oh **** this sound expensive hope the car was mega cheap cause if you cant fit a new engine yourself its gonna cost lots in labour alone
