Every scoundrel from the motor trade I have ever encountered is always keen to tell you how they clear all the codes/fault lights (before a prospective purchaser turns up) and how they try and hide problems.
Once you have bought the vehicle and the faults begin to show they can mess you about with all sorts of stories and explanations as to why the fault is "common", "they all do that" and "not a big deal" and "of course they will fix it".

In my experience most garages don’t want to touch my P38. Even if they know Rangies they take one look at a BMW engine in there and ask how I got it in there? They don’t believe me when I say it’s original, doesn’t fill me with confidence. Head scratching is not something I can afford to pay them for

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced diagnostic tool and are they easy to use? When codes come up do they explain the fault? Any codes to watch out for?
I’m talking to a dealer later about a 2010 3.6TDV8 with 70,000 miles. Only done 20000 in last 4 years, 2000 last year. Now that’s either a great find or an indicator maybe there are faults in last year and someone trying to shift it..
Not everything shows up on diagnostics. A Bluetooth ELM327 reader coupled to the Torque app on an Android phone will do engine for most modern cars. Other option is check Storey Wilson's RSW website and see if he has something for your car. After that things get a little pricey. Nanocom is Excellent and iid is good for some cars.
Beware the GM box on diesels. Think the turbos blew on one of the engines as well but cannot remember which year. Personally I'd go V8 with LPG over a diesel.
Yes, I have an MOT check on my phone. You can see if issues repeat, if fixed, if mileage stack up. Has it been standing. Good tip.

You need a few diagnostics for a RR, one for engine different one for EAS etc.
70,000 miles it’s either due a good service, or just been done.

I mean a proper HPI, stolen, written off type check. Mine has been a write off but for some reason is not shown on the V5.

Might be cost of claim, not damaged as such. Insurance wanted to write off my Fender when a woman hit me, was due to age of vehicle - was nothing wrong with it.
It shows a write off on the vehicle check and the previous V5 but not on the new V5.

No she got out and wanted to fight us. As she was okay and didn’t live far we left her to her write off Fez. I had a front bumper needed bending out and hub shaft seal started leaking
